I don't get it...

The Hawks don't have much leverage as far as Josh is concern even if they have the rights to trade him because he will be a FA come season's end. The other team would have to be like New Jersey Nets Dumb when they traded away their 6th pick for a couple monthe rental of gerald Wallace.

If Josh does not agree to an extension with that team, then why would that team trade for Josh if its just a 1 yr rental?

With the C's for example, the Hawks get what they want in terms of Draft pick(say Royce White), they get to keep their own pick and they get Bass in a S & T for example. Danny can even dangle future 1st or what. But to completely say the C's have no chance at Smith is I think not impossible since we really can just wait for him at season's end to sign him anyways.

I kind feel the same way as far as all the talk about Atlanta trying to move him for a high draft pick. Unless he agrees to an extension with the new team, why would the move a high lottery pick for a 1 season rental?

Our best chance to get Josh may be if he pulls a Melo and say he only wants to come to Boston. Atlanta, of course, would have no obligation to give into the request but other teams would be a lot less willing to give up key pieces and outbid us.

Supposedly the C's have given Royce White a Promise at # 21, but other reports are stating that the Hawks are the team that really wants White .

Now I know this couldn't happen on draft night because the only players under contract are PP,Rondo ,Bradley,Johnson,Moore  , but I was wondering how long do you have to wait to trade players after you draft them(and don't trade them on draft night)?

I am thinking a deal of

S+T Bass, #21 Royce White and # 22 and filler might be able to land Josh Smith. The deal breaker to me would be including Bradley to that package .

Josh Smith is on his last year of his deal and has already made it known for the past few years that he wants to leave Atlanta. He is also best friends with Rondo and played in high school with him as we all know .

So do you think a trade like that could land us Josh Smith ?

PG: Rondo    / Vet min
SG: Bradley  / Ray
SF: PP       / Green
PF: Smith    / Wilcox
 C: KG       / Steamer

Not bad, but I think we need a better backup big man, maybe camby?

The problem isn't trading the picks it's trading one of our unrestricted FAs.  We can't trade them until after July 1st, so this could not be a draft night deal.

Further, Atlanta would probably want Jeff Green over Bass.

I am on the record as saying I would welcome Josh Smith to this team, because if KG does retire he provides us with at least 70% of what KG did for us, at least on the court.

If Danny could move Jeff Green, our 2 first round picks, and maybe Brooklyn's 2nd rounder next year, it would be one hell of a deal.  Basically trading Perkins and a late 1st rounder and early 2nd rounder for one of the best PFs in the league.

Id trade green and whoever we pick at 21 and 22 and a future first for smith and whoever they pick at 23...

If they dont want to give us the 23rd then im still fine with green 21 and 22 for smith and a future pick.

I wish people would stop making trade proposals using Jeff Green in a S&T.  We cannot S&T him, new CBA rules prevent it.

Also, I agree with others in that Atlanta doesn't hold very much leverage.  They likely are not going to get any substantive trade offers without an agreement to a contract extension from Smith.

Well, they also don't have that much motivation to trade him, since they could just let him expire and use the cap space next summer if no one gives them good enough value.

How much cap would they have though? They'd have a lot of money tied up in Joe Johnson, Al Horford, and Marvin Williams. That puts them somewhere in the $40m range at least for those 3 guys. Idk know who else would be on the books for them outside of those guys.

Well, that didn't take long: with Atlanta GM Danny Ferry in his first day on the job, the message is spreading that he'll be looking to shake up the Hawks' roster and rebuild in some capacity. No specifics yet, but forward Josh Smith has tremendous value and an expiring contract (next season at $13.2 million), center Al Horford will be healthy again and is an attractive piece as well (four years, $48 million remaining) and shooting guard Joe Johnson has the sort of deal that any sane GM would try - and likely try in vain - to get rid of (four years and $89.3 million left).

No one will trade for Joe Johnson's bloated contract.

Ferry is a fool if he's trading Al Horford.

Smith? Might as well get something for him, since he'll bolt after next year.

I wonder if Charlotte and Atlanta might be trade partners.

Charlotte sends out Corey Maggette, Ty Thomas, and a draft pick for Josh Smith and Marvin Williams, for instance.

I'd be shocked if Charlotte did that, assuming you're talking about the number 2 pick.

Very tough to give up that pick if you don't know you'd have Josh Smith for more than a single season.

I expect this to be a crazy off season with a ton of moves being made.

Does anyone think that Joe Johnson still has value despite his contract? Do you think he'll be amnestied if they try to blow up their team?

No, not the #2.

But if Charlotte could get the #4 and an additional 1st from Cleveland, maybe the #4, with Atlanta's 1st coming back as well?

Charlotte would be unloading the worst contract in Thomas, and Smith and Marvin Williams would immediately become the starting forwards on that Cat roster. With Kemba, Henderson, and Biyombo, that could be a fun team to watch. Very quick and athletic, lots of running (would definitely need some shooting, though).

You'd have the entire season to evaluate Smith, and either flip him at the deadline, or resign him.

I've long thought that Boston might be able to put together a decent package something like this, I think would work for both teams

Smith and Williams

for

Allen (1 yr, 6-7 million), Bass (3 yr, 20 million), and then any two (or three if absolutely necessary) of the following: Johnson, either player drafted this year, or a 2013 first (lottery protected)

I think Atlanta might prefer Green, but I'm not sure Boston has sign and trade rights with him (they have bird rights, but might not be able to sign and trade him based on the rule).  If Boston can do a sign and trade for Green, put him instead of Allen.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

how about Josh Smith and Joe Johnson for Noah and deng ?

Chicago would then have to trade Boozer or amnesty him

PF: Josh Smith   / Gibson
 C: Asik         / Dradt pick

ATL

SF: Deng
PF: Horford
 C: Noah

I don't think Atlanta wants to add salary like Thomas's trying to rebuild, but who knows if they love a certain prospect...
