So how does this effect going after a big FA next year like we all planned to?

We couldn't sign a max guy, but depending on what we do with Jeff Green and whether Bass opts out, we still could have around $12m+ to sign somebody.
Stretching West could also get us more room if he doesn't work

3 years? please tell me there is another shoe to drop in all this. killing the cap space for next year for a over 30 with knee problems is not cool.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
It's up on RealGM.

http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/217289/David_West_To_Celtics_In_Sign_And_Trade

I'm convinced it's for JO and Delonte, and they both get flipped to the Lakers with Delonte backing up CP3.
Lakers may have to give up more now though, maybe blake?

This is the best news for us.
I've wanted West and his knee injury is actually a blessing in disguise for us now.

DANNY AINGE FOR PREZZ!!!
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

It doesn't if you amnesty Pierce to make it work

That won't happen.  I think Wyc is too loyal to Pierce to allow him to be waived to sign somewhere else.

So that would leave the C's with the following salaries:

  • Paul Pierce = $16.79 million
  • Rajon Rondo = $11 million
  • David West ~~ $9 million
  • JaJuan Johnson = $1.4 million
  • Avery Bradley = $1.6 million
  • Clippers pick ~~ $2 million
  • C's 2012 pick ~~ $1.2 million
  • Cap holds for five empty roster spots = $2.5 million

A sub-total of $45.5 million versus a cap of $58-61 million.

So $13-16 million in cap room to sign free agents. They'd have no problem freeing up an extra couple of million by moving some mix of JJ, Bradley and the 2012 pick to give them enough to sign a max contract if necessary (and if a high cap figure).

Stretching West could also get us more room if he doesn't work

So West would be owed $18 million over two years so that would be $4.4 million over five years if stretched, right?

That would free up an extra $4.6 million. That would be enough for Boston to sign a max contract free agent.

name a free agent other than chris paul, deron williams, and dwight howard that the celtics would have given a max contract to.

Yeah, with those players looking pretty certain to wind up elsewhere, cap space next summer isn't looking as valuable as it used to.

cant we at least make this move for someone without a major knee injury?

So, if Danny wanted to sign another center to replace Jermaine O'Neal ... his best options would be:
  • Kwame Brown - v.likely out of Boston's price range
  • Joel Przybilla
  • Eric Dampier
  • Aaron Gray
  • Kurt Thomas
  • And the DJ Mbengas and Kyrylo Fesenkos of the world

We're lucky to have the chance to make the move for West.  Guys like that don't come that cheaply.  And he'll be splitting time with KG, so he'll be taking less wear and tear than he's used to.

EDIT: And as Faf pointed out if he gets hurt we can use the "stretch" on his deal and still have room for a max guy next year.

This is great news for KG, too - he's got the best backup PF in the league to spell him during the compressed season.

Think that Green + JO would be too much in salary ($12 mil). All reports (rumors) I saw said JO + another player. would rather loose Bass and a pick than Green.

Wilcox, West, Green, Daniels, Dooling would be an awesome second unit.

Says he can't get off the ground right now... All the stats of years past doesn't help us this year if he can't play. Remember how long it took KG to come back. Something else must be up.

On Pryzbilla: Looks like he is considering retiring.

He mentioned this last year also.

Damp, Pryz, Thomas, or Gray... (in this order).  I think they could be convinced to play on this team, especially if other options are running out and the money isn't there from other teams as well...
