Quick question
Is Memphis any different then GS when they upset Dallas?
I don't mean style. I mean they had a match up advantage over SA that allowed them to win.
Honestly, a very very good question considering Memphis only won a single round this past postseason. I have a quick answer (more directed to your question) and a longer answer (more regarding our team):
Quick answer: yes, because Dallas was criticized all series for not pounding GS down low while playing a defensive 4/5 of Stephen Jackson and Biedrins. Dallas lost that series more than GS won the series. I don't think anybody doubts that Memphis won their first round series this postseason. As SO pointed out, GS was a very flawed team that year that every NBA fan knew that some team was eventually going to just pound down low. Did anybody watch that Spurs/Memphis series and think: "Oh man, Memphis was lucky that SA didnt do (some basketball strategy). Just wait until they play (some remaining playoff team)." I never heard that on this board nor from any friends. I'd be willing to bet that neither Dallas nor Miami were praying to draw Memphis after seeing the first round.
Longer answer: I think it's important to first point out that the Pawnee Pacers are a better team than the playoff Memphis Grizzlies. Equal 4-5, a better 3 (Gay vs. Battier), a better 1, and a 2 who brings a different style game (good, while slightly inferior defender, but can spread the floor way better for Parker and our bigs to work). We are
not trying to be Grizzlies 2.0, we are just trying to build a successful basketball team and some Grizzlies happen to fall into our hands at tremendous value. We have the email conversations to prove it. And I haven't heard anybody point out a viable basketball-realted flaw in the Pawnee Pacers yet, only comparisons to the Memphis Grizzlies, which is not what we are striving for. We are striving to put together as complete of a basketball team as possible. I'll repeat that we just happened to have had the 3 most talented Grizzlies fall to us while also acquiring a still very talented NBA Finals MVP.
So I hope people don't get too wrapped up in comparing us to the real-life Memphis Grizzlies. The Pawnee Pacers are their own team with an absolutely devastating frontcourt duo; a backup frontcourt player who can play as good man defense as any backup 4/5 in the CBNBA; a steady, proven, and NBA Finals MVP for PG; and two wings who can shoot the ball and defend well (one of which is capable of doing much more offensively also). I'd say "what's not to like?", but we plan on addressing a backup PG and some height at backup C with 2 of our remaining 5 picks.
And I'd also like to point out that I genuinely appreciate every single critique and positive comment made thus far about our Pacers. I have been commenting on many teams so far in this thread and I will continue to do so, especially to those who have put in the effort to carefully consider our team.
