So, what are you guessing Belichick got for the pick?

I know its frustrating, but getting a 2012 first rounder, and a second rounder this year for the 28th pick is great value, and they pick again in just a couple slots.

meh.

Guess bill's ok with us suffering another year of all his young guys trying to "get it" on defense while we get slaughtered on third down and overall defense.

It really irks me that this team has turned itself into the st. louis rams, all offense, no defense.

No coincidence they haven't been a true contender since 2007.

Ingram to New Orleans, by way of the Pats.

The Pats get a #2 and a #1 next year.  Good value, I guess, but I think they would have been better off with Ingram.

that's good value for the pick.
they have 3 2nd rounders this year; there will be a quality DE available at the top of the 2nd, I'd bet, and a quality RB available at the latter end of the 2nd/ early 3rd.

how many years do we get sold this though?

not to quote felger, but he's right on this, all that trading down for great value and stockpiling picks is kinda counter productive if you never use that value to take a shot/ miss when you do (which bill does, more often than not).

See: patriots draft classes, 2004-2009. got a ton of value picks, told that next year it would pay off, and no ones left from those other picks except mayo, a pick they didn't trade down.

2010 they hit on these value picks + mccourty

I know we all go nuts for value, but money in the bank thats never used doesn't help.

Unless they think Ingram is a franchise RB, no point in taking him in the first. I personally like Ryan Williams just as much, and he will be there in the 2nd. You can get good RB's in the 2nd/3rd round, so i'm fine with passing up Ingram. It's likely they can get the same defensive player at 33, that they could have gotten at 28.

Now they have three 2nd's this year, and two firsts next year.

This is frustrating. The Patriots need defense.

Yeah, BB has been doing this a lot longer and a lot better than I have.  I think that at some point you have to take elite talent over stockpiling picks, though.  I consider Ingram to be elite talent (much like Clay Matthews, as Kiper just pointed out.)

and his drafts are always overrated.

he hit last year, but overall you can make a pretty convincing argument, and some writers around here have, that his "trade down for value and never risk" strategy has led to a void in players developed to take over for the vets already in place and acquired through FA for the 2001-2004 teams.

getting value does not a good drafter make.

But BB *has* taken shots with his draft picks.

the one thing you guys are over looking is that the picks can be used in trades.

e.g.: when thinking back to the 2007 draft, you have to factor in that the Pats got Wes Welker via the 2 #2 picks.

This year, if trades are allowed starting tomorrow, one of the three #2 picks could turn into WR Steve Smith.

Carimi to the Bears.  I'm very happy with that pick.  He was who I was hoping for, outside of Castonzo.

also, I don't understand why the Pats keep getting hit on not selecting Clay Matthews.  If you redo that draft, no way he slips out of top 5.  So it wasn't just BB that missed on Clay, it was like 20 other teams....
But because he was selected in the spot the Pats traded out of, it was somehow this huge miss for them, but not anyone picking before them.
