My eight favorite teams, in no particular order:
Toronto
New York
Milwaukee
Washington
Atlanta
Chicago
Denver
Utah
Who am I slighting? Who am I overrating?
(Also, I think that when people actually look at the West, those who are calling Sacramento a borderline playoff team are going to be very surprised.)
I feel slighted.
Your team is above-average, I just can't envision a circumstance where it wins a title. The same is true of Indiana.
As for Seattle, I'm not sure if your roster was updated, KC. The rankings are 1) off the cuff, and 2) based upon the rosters listed in the Transactions thread.
I feel like the underestimation of Josh Smith and Roddy Beaubois is the reason for the slight.
The reason I have a shot of the title is because I have 3 of the top 10 shot blockers in the league. The best point guard in the game, speed and solid rebounding.
Celtics fans should know if you have a team defense with an athletic 4 who can block shots, a stout 5 who can also block shots, a championship defense can be built around that.
Let's look at your team:
1. Nobody can say anything bad about Deron. He's a great player, although I wouldn't have him as my #1 point guard in the league. Right now, you don't have a backup PG.
2. After that, you have a 6'0" combo guard starting at SG. I like Beaubois a lot, but he's inexperienced, and I don't think he's good enough to start on a championship team. Unfortunately, behind him you have a rookie and the perpetually injured Marquis Daniels.
3. At SF, you have a pothead / headcase coming off of a major injury. I think he'll be pretty good this year, but he's a locker room nightmare. He's backed up by a rookie.
4. At PF, you have a hybrid SF/PF who, again, is a headcase. Smith is a legitimately great defender, but his offense is pretty sporadic. Behind him, you have a guy who largely sat on the bench last year.
5. Lastly, at center, you have a guy who, once again, has been known to have trouble with guys in his locker room. Haywood is a solid defensive center, and forms a good defensive front line with Smith. Behind him, you have a guy who does little more than block shots, and who struggled to earn minutes for a terrible Wizards team.
6.I don't see that team as being in any way comparable to the 2008 Celtics. I've liked your teams in the past, but I think this one is going to be a playoff team that loses in the second round or earlier.
I numbered your points to make a response easier.
1. I think he is the best pg in the league. Roddy will be my back up pg and as we saw in the first half of the season Marquis is actually very good running the show.
2. Beaubois, is an unknown but he is young and will get better. Marquis will give us good minutes for a good portion of the season. Rookies do regularly contribute for very good teams. Hayward can play some 2 and I am confident either him or Henry will emerge.
3. Josh Howard has been a very good player for his career and should return after his knee surgery. I suspect that his poor play last year was due to injury and which deteriorated into his surgery. Quis can back him up and so can Hayward.
4. If the concern is that great about my 3 position Josh Smith will slide in and play some 3 to have him Haywood and McGee on the court at once (aka Minnesota Block Party). Just because a player doesn't play well on a specific team in a specific system does not mean he isn't good. Just look at Bass numbers in Dallas and you will know he's good enough to start on some teams in the NBA.
5. Haywood only has problems in the locker room on losing teams. This is not a losing team. McGee was 21 last season and showed flashes. Bad team or not rarely do players develop that quickly, especially project big men. So you have to assume he gets better, the question is how much better. Top 10 in the league in blocks number one in the league in block percentage. He is ready to play major minutes.
6. My teams in the past have always been underrated. This year the trend continues. Would you like my team more with Smith at the 3 and Howard McGee at the 4 and Howard at the two to start? I like that lineup but I'm not sure how the voters would react to it.
