BLOCKBUSTER TRADE
DEN trades Gilbert Arenas, Luol Deng, Paul Millsap, Marcus Camby, 11.21

DAL trades Tim Duncan, Taj Gibson, Trevor Ariza, Rasual Butler
I am stunned that this trade is being allowed.

I am a little too.  There's no way nick's original trade getting Duncan could have been more lopsided than this.  The highest picked player by DEN here was the 30th pick in the 2nd round.  Did nick include a pick higher than that in his trade?

EDIT:  I would imagine the only non-involved person who likes this trade is IP.
Yeah my original trade for Duncan was

My 2.5, 3.22 and 8.26

for

Duncan, 5.25, 12.25

Well, I'll just say this: never sell off a former 1st round pick without putting him on the block publicly.

I'm willing to bet a half a dozen other GMs would have done due diligence to beat that offer, present company included.

In CFF's defense, it was well-known that he was willing to sell Duncan for a hill of beans.

Really??

Because I went back with an offer to him starting with Bynum that was way more than fair and he said he was sticking with Duncan.

I got the same response to my offers.

Perhaps something changed today. Haven't exchanged PMs recently, as I considered it a dead end.

In more important news the CrotoPicklebutts will settle on a flier in Micheal Redd for the 9th round.

FWIW --- I have 30 PMs to CFF in my outbox; and more than once said to myself "this is the last offer/counteroffer/counter-counteroffer I'm doing"....

As soon as I traded down from 1.20 and still was able to get Westbrook (who i actually ranked alongside Duncan (mainly b/c of age) on my original 1st round draft board) at 2.11, my goal was to acquire enough "assets" in good early round picks to be able "trade back up" into an star player.

Getting Arenas (1st/2nd round talent) with the 2nd to last pick in the 4th was a big part of making that happen.

I have no problem with you or CFF, GC. You did your job of convincing CFF to take a lopsided deal

G Michael Redd(notes) is squelching talk that he won’t ever play again. Redd, who is rehabbing from knee surgery for the second straight season, has told his friends he expects to return this season, and he fully intends on signing a new contract next summer when he is an unrestricted free agent

Yeah my original trade for Duncan was

My 2.5, 3.22 and 8.26

for

Duncan, 5.25, 12.25
Boxers send 2.5, 3.22, 8.26

Mavericks send 1.6(Tim Duncan), 6.6, 12.25 from the PM
Which would be: Andrew Bynum, Thadeus YOung, Nazr Mohamad

Tim Duncan, Boris Diaw, 12.25

Draft pick wise this trade is:

1.6, 4.6, 6.6, 8.6
2.30, 3.4,3.20,4.28,11.21

He trades down further but also picks up a lot more value with the remaining picks. That said I think he'd have been better of keeping Duncan.

But beyond the draft picks, in the end I went with looking at the players. He downgraded from an elite player to a bunch of good ones, that's not how you win.

Beating a dead horse but I don't like either trade for Dallas.

At the risk of fanning flames, which i don't mean to do.... I'm just commenting generally for this and future CB Drafts; i'd make the same comments if i weren't involved in this deal.

There's a real danger/distortion in converting actually drafted players back to the spot they were ultimately taken (as Fafnir mentioned earlier; I think he's sort of academically following out the arguement above, but is looking at actual player "value" regardless of pick position).

Quote
Quote
WAS send 2.5, 3.22, 8.26
DAL sends 1.6(Tim Duncan), 6.6, 12.25 from the PM

which if you look at what those picks turned into would be:

Quote
WAS sends Andrew Bynum, Thadeus YOung, Nazr Mohamad
DAL sendsTim Duncan, Boris Diaw, 12.25

The problem is that's not who everyone would have taken at those picks.

For example, just using my ranks of available players at each pick (i.e. not going back after then fact and saying who i think in hindsight is the BPA; (ask Lucky17 how much of an excel geek i am....)), the WAS/DAL trade if i magically controlled those picks would be more like:

Quote
WAS send Bynum*, Ariza, Beno Udrih
DAL sends 1.6(Tim Duncan), Michael Beasley, 12.25

*I actually had Al Jefferson, Westbrook and about 18 other guys ahead of Bynum at 2.5, but to make the big-for-big argument, i'll leave Bynum at 2.5

Just my 2 cents.
