Couch isn't quite on the Jamarcus Russell/Ryan Leaf bust level.

I agree.  His numbers were mediocre but he was better than either of those two and I think its pretty clear..  People also forget he help lead the Browns to a playoff appearance.

What about Akili Smith?
Not just because he was terrible and because they had to pass on some great players to take him, but because the Saints were offering NINE Draft picks to trade up to the #3 spot!

He was definitely a flop but he was also the 3rd QB taken in that draft and didn't carry the hype that Leaf & Russell were getting in the days leading up to their respective drafts, IMO.  The draft picks certainly could've helped the Bengals in those days so I guess you can factor that into the discussion as cost/benefit.

Also, the money thrown at Leaf & Russell was ridiculous.  Smith is definitely a bust but I can't put him on the same level as Leaf & Russell.

Some people would say Alex Smith was a bust, especially since the other 1rst round QB replaced Brett F and went to the Pro Bowl (A Rodgers) but I'd fight it

First of all they gave him a different offensiv coordinator every single year of his career till now. Second they gave him almost no offensive help. The only 1rst rnders they gave him after that was TE Vernon Davis the next year and they traded to get OT Joe Staley.  Big freaking whoop. Then last year they got Michael Crabtree who held out half the year. Unlike Matt Stafford that got tons of help.

LeGarret Blount....I hope the Pats get him. I wanted him earlier

Staphon Johnsons...I hope the Pats get him. But I don't think he'll be good. Why? he wasn't that good before the injury

Seems as though Tennessee has signed both LeGarrette Blount and Stafon Johnson.  I doubt either of those guys replaces LenDale White, though.

Highlight videos of some of the Pats' draft picks here:
http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/extra_points/2010/04/heres_your_visu.html

Brandon Spikes and Aaron Hernandez videos are good.  Taylor Price silent video is interesting.  The video of the punter is about as boring as can be, as are a few of the others...

It seems Adalius Thomas has been released.

How soon before the Jets sign him?

Are they allowed to?  I think they're capped regarding the number of unrestricted free agents they can sign this year, due to the "uncapped year" rules.  I think they may be at that limit.

My Understanding is that because he was cut he is elligable to sign with any team and is not considered a ,"True," Unrestricted free agent.

Yup.  Here's the situation described.

Quote
The rule will restrict the final eight teams in the playoffs from signing free agents. The final four teams shall not be permitted to negotiate and sign any unrestricted free agent to a player contract except for players who acquired their status by being cut or were on the final four team when their contract expired. Playoff teams five thru eight get a break to sign one player with a salary of $4,925,000 or more and any number of players with a first-year salary of no more than $3,275,000 and an annual increase of no more than 30 percent in the following years.

So, since he was cut, the Final 8 restrictions shouldn't apply to him.

Why did TE Hernandez fall all the way to the 4th round?

I heard that about Hernandez on the radio this morning.

I definitely don't like the players that smoke the ganga, but obviously Randy does, and obviously if the NFL kicked out every player that did that we'd be down to 10 man rosters

Was listening to the radio talk about Brandon Spikes and then did some reading.

Apparently he's going to be the more Ted Johnsonny type. Kinda big and slow and gets the job done.

Basically Gary Guyton likes to try to avoid blockers and Spikes likes to try to hurt em. Guyton can almost certainly drop into coverage better.

So Guyton will play more against the Colts and Saints type of teams, but the Pats' last memory is of Joe Flacco throwing 10 times and the Ravens running for like 237 yards.

Spikes is an attempt to instill leadership, confidence, and physical toughness.

Even though it's a passing league you still have 3 and 2 all the time. If it's a run, good. If it's a pass Mayo will drop back in the 10-20 yard range and Spikes will cover the flat looking to hurt smaller 3rd down backs or TEs or WRs that come across the middle and try to cover the 7 to 15 yard range.

When you have to go to Buffalo and play on a December night, or the Jets come here for a 1rst round playoff, or Miami has to come here in late November and teams run a little more Spikes will be waiting, so don't expect to see him lots at first.

The draft did phenomenal in the tv ratings.

Mack Brown announcing Colt McCoy is highly likely to be the start of a trend. It's a huge recruiting tool. Get ready to see a parade of coaches and I gotta admit I'm looking forward to seeing Paterno up there. Maybe a few former coaches like Tom Osbourne. Oh yeah. Get ready for politicians too. The ultimate would be Obama for a Redskins or Bears pick, but I doubt the guy would fly up there. Rudy Guliani for a Giants pick. Mayor Kotch for a Jets pick. Celebs too. George Wendt for da Bears. Eminem or Kiss for Detroit. I have no idea who'd do the Pats as long as it's not James Taylor. And since it's espn probably atheletes too. Lebron for the Browns. Jeter for the Jets/Giants.  Whateva
