Anybody think that a better defensive backfield will improve the passrush?  I read last year that BB was hesitant to Blitz because he felt that this backfield needed the help with coverage.  If this pick helps sure up that coverage and allows bb to blitz more isnt that a good thing?

Its kinda one of those "chicken & the egg" questions.

I'm a strong believer that the strength of a team can be measured by the strength of the lines.  If you have a really good D-line and O-line, it gives your skill players (pass rushers, cornerbacks, running backs, quarterbacks etc) more time and more room to do their thing.

Tom Brady didn't look so great last season but a big part of that was the fact that his O-line wasn't giving him 10 seconds to make every throw (like, say, Peyton Manning gets).  Even Chad Henne looked great in a game against the Pats when his O-line was giving him all the time in the world.

Improving the lines should be the Pats' number 1 priority.

Do you think the Pats use a 2nd rounder on O-line help today? It wouldn't surprise me.

I wouldn't have been shocked if they had addressed the O-Line in the first round.  Two of the guys I was eyeing that I thought could've been helpful to the Pats were taken right before the Pats original slot of #22 (Iupati & Pouncey).

I've always thought Mike Reiss (ESPN Boston reporter, former Globe reporter) does a good job, and wanted to pass along a snippet from his chat today:

Quote
I think the draft is great, but I'm now wondering if media members -- and I include myself with this -- have blown it up to the point where opinions are just off the charts. I enjoy studying the prospects and the draft, but I think it's important to realize that we are probably operating with a very, very small fraction of information compared to the NFL teams.

With all the blabbering heads on TV, all the draft grades, all the commentary and articles about draft day winners and losers, it just struck me as a very humble statement.  At the end of the day, the reporters really know very little, and most of us get our info from the reporters, so what the heck do we know?  The teams have a ton of info (in particular medical info) that we as fans just don't have access to.  Something to keep in mind during this process.

I was watching the ESPN feed last night and the only guy that I was giving any credence to was Jon Gruden.  Sorry, Tom Jackson & Steve Young do not belong on a draft telecast.  I can't stand Jackson but if you're gonna use those two, wait until the season starts.  They're useless for a draft.

Young finds a way to over critique every QB and I'm utterly convinced that's due to the fact that he was a QB and can't stand the thought that other guys can be good at the position.  Also, did he actually get a pick right last night?  He kept screaming names right before the Commish came out and he didn't nail one except for Dez Bryant which everyone & their mom knew was coming.

Kiper is what he is.  A draftnik who puts a ton of time and effort into his field but ultimately ends up playing a guessing game.  He's not a scout and has no idea what's going on in the draft war-rooms or how these kids translate to specific teams' schemes and such.

In terms of insiders, I'm a big fan of Schefter and find him to be more connected than Mortenson these days.

The only thing that turned me off of Gruden was his Tebow love. You would have thought he was ready to nominate the guy for sainthood the way he was gushing over his "intangibles and character".

After the Tiger scandal I DO want to know what these guys are like on AND off the field but I don't need anything more that "he's a good guy" if he's a good guy. I was getting ready for Gruden to ask Tebow to marry him the way he was going on.

So does any body else see the pats moving one of their 2nd rounders for a Vet?

Maybe Gruden knows something we don't, like Denver Broncos will need a new GM or Head Coach soon...

I think it is a distinct possibility.  There were rumors that the Giants might move Osi (since they drafted that DE -- JPP), or that the Redskins might move Haynesworth.  Both teams deny they're looking to trade, but you never know.  I'd be happy with either for a 2nd rounder.

If we got haynesworth and then went to a 4-3 I would be thrilled.  Wilfork and Big Al on the same line would be legendary.

Skin's fan here.  you can have him.  we'll cut a massive salary for someone that didn't produce enough and we'll get some better, younger, cheaper assets.

However, if the Skins cough up Haynesworth, we'd better be getting more than a 2nd rounder, particularly those low ones the Pats have.  I'd consider all 3 but nothing less than a prime starter and 2 of those picks.

Word is that a 2nd and 4th would get it done

This is my philosophy as well so you can tell from that how happy I am with the Bills pick. ::)

Luxury pick after luxury pick(Lynch, Spiller, McKelvin, Losman) and our lines remain in shambles. We finally went after the right position last year, but took a shrimp defensive end in Maybin. He should do better in the 3-4, but my Bills brethren are very angry about leaving Orakpo on the board.
