I'm not posting this to be reactionary.  We should be expected to suck when KG and Pierce are out.  But I think age has caught up to Ray Allen.  He's 34... he's good, but no longer great.  It seems to me he's mostly just a catch and shoot guy these days.  A better version of Eddie House.  Reggie MIller in his waning years.  The Ray I watched in Seattle would have put up 30+ tonight.

I don't think this team (even at 100%) is invincible.  I think we are a top 2 team, but I don't know whether or not we are going to beat the Lakers (or Cavs or Magic on a bad night).  I'm not sure removing Ray is going to destroy this team.

He has a 20 million dollar expiring contract.  If you combine him with Tony Allen, Marquis Daniels, Eddie House, Brian Scalabrine... I think you can muster up 30 million+ in expiring contracts.   That counts for something.  I'm not sure which teams will be selling at the deadline, but I think right now I'm at the point where I think Ray might be more value to this team's success as an expiring contract than a player.   We could land some young star caliber players for that... as opposed to just re-signing a 35 year old Ray to less money next year.  If Ainge finds the right team, he probably could convince them to buy out Ray soon after the contract.

I'm fully onboard with a Ray Allen trade.

I love Ray too, but I want us to take advantage of the situation.   There are some broke teams out there who want to unload big contracts.   There are also teams like the Kings who might be thinking, "Tyreke Evans is our mealticket... he essentially plays the same position as Kevin martin... why pay Kevin Martin?"... I hope Ainge is exploring all of the options.

We have this epic free agent class coming up, an economy that is effecting teams greater than ever before... and happen to be sitting here with 30+ million in expiring contracts which equal one good 35 year old shooting guard and some junk.

Yea, the C's are struggling a bit at the moment but you've got to realize our starting 5 is only one season removed from winning a championship. Once we're 100% healthy again, we will be competitive, as we've shown flashes of dominance and brilliance this season already. I'm not ready to blow it up. Ray is not the same player he was 10 yrs ago, or even 2 yrs ago but he's still an important piece of the puzzle.

And in a few seasons, I see him willingly moving to the bench and becoming a nice 6th man.

Can't say I completely disagree but don't think Danny will do it unless Paul and KG looked to be out for quite a while and Danny felt he needed to trade Ray for someone of quality to keep the team afloat waiting for KG and Paul to return before the playoffs.

Also, I would demand quality back, not just bodies. Ray, Scal and parts to:

Detroit for Prince and Rip
Dallas for Terry and Howard
Sacramento for Martin and bad money
Milwaukee for Redd, Ridnour and Warrick

Something along these lines, otherwise, forget it. Don't trade Ray unless you get a clear replacement plus an upgrade elsewhere.

Agreed -- Ray Allen is becoming a role player (good D, good scoring, great shooting). A excellent role player but a role player nonetheless.

How about we trade you for a couple of morons I know trolling the Celtics' board on ESPN.com. :)

No but seriously....Ray's not even the problem, and here's a suggestion on trade proposals; know who you think we should trade for before bothering to make the topic. You just make the topic less compelling than it'll already be right off the bat.

See, I can buy this. I'd love to take that proposal to Detroit, but I don't know if they'd bite. Same for Dallas.

Sacramento might take that...but I don't know about Martin that much. I'd love to take Redd from Milwaukee, that's for sure...don't know about the other two, though.

First of all, Ray Allen is merely a catch and shoot player these days, because that is what the offense the Boston runs ask of him, and he sacrificed his game and adjusted his game to fit the Boston offense when he was traded to the celtics.

Ray Allen was getting most of the offensive touches in Seattle, you dont go from avg. 26 ppg to 17 the next year, without some major incident happening.(the trade and then sacrificing)

Anyway, Ray Allen is the oldest of the Big 3, but he seems to be the healthiest. If you think about it he's been the healthiest player on the entire roster this year.

I wouldn't trade Ray right now, bc of course we are still contenders, and I wouldn't risk ruining the chemistry that we currently have. Getting young guys in the middle of the season, you run the high risk, of them not understanding or picking up the offense, not understanding how the C's like to play defense.

I dont think it would be smart to use the season, as a training camp for anybody during a championship caliber season.

Also, I wouldn't want to trade Ray Allen away, because there's a chance Ray would be willing to re-sign for a lot less, than some people would expect.

Eh. Redd can't seem to stay healthy these days either. And Rip's contract is too long.

I'd be interested in Martin, he's a great scorer and is only 26. That'd be a nice core with Rondo moving forward but its probably unrealistic.

I'm not sure what the limit would be, really.   I don't really know how desperate some of these teams are.   I've heard for a while that the Hornets are in horrible position financially, for example.  They wouldn't get rid of Chris Paul, but at some point do they have to dump David West?

Ray for David West and Posey?  David West and Stojakovic?  David West and Okafor?  How much does your opinion change if they are willing to buy out Ray?

What if the Kings want to trade Kevin Martin and Nocioni for Ray?

Try telling me the Wizards wouldn't get rid of Gilbert Arenas for Ray...  Heck... trying telling me the Wizards wouldn't get rid of Arenas AND Jamison for Ray, Scal and Tony.

The Warriors are 9-22... When do they start considering owing Biedrins 45 million, Ellis 55 million and Maggette 40 million over the next 4-5 years a bad idea.   Think we might be able to grab two for Ray?

Chicago?  How bout Hinrich and Deng for Ray?  Maybe they wanna free themselves from owing them 87 million combined.

Charlotte?  Are they happy being on the hook paying Diaw and Gerald Wallace 67 million?

I'm just sayin... right now seems to be the perfect storm of struggling teams, a struggling economy and a looming free agent class... and although I love Ray as much as the next guy, I'm pretty confident we'll regret not making a move in a year unless we win a title.  And I think it's possible we might actually improve our squad in the near term AND long term by making a trade depending on who we get and whether or not the team buys Ray out.
