Saw "The Butler" last night.  I wanted to love it, and half of me did...but...I thought all the stars in cameo roles were not that good, and were mostly distracting.  I really haven't made up my mind yet about the movie.  I was around from the Kennedy years on (I was in High School when Kennedy was shot), and closely following the events and the civil rights movement at that time.

From what I've read, the movie is highly fictionalized.

This source is biased, but it hits on some of the key changes: http://www.newsmax.com/Reagan/Butler-Reagan-Oprah-Allen/2013/08/22/id/521814
Every time I think, something is just wrong with this, I think...but it was through one man's experience, and he had a bird's eye seat.  That is why I haven't criticized any of the historical things.  The presidents seemed so wrong, somehow, to me, but it may have just been the "I know that actor, who is he?" and "gee...Robin Williams is so talented" distractions, or that I remember those presidents (through tv and film).   It has gotten some excellent reviews and sure has made a lot of money.

My problem is when they start changing that bird's eye view, but present it as if it's historical fact.

I haven't seen the movie, but I probably won't now.  Why?  *SPOILERS*  I think that it's really disgusting that they fictionalized a reality, and completely made up the rape of the butler's mother / murder of his father.  That's just really terrible, manipulative tripe that is meant to enrage the audience.  It's unnecessary.  *END SPOILERS*

Also just watched On the Waterfront for the first time.  I can understand the hype around this movie now.

As an aside...it was difficult getting my husband to go see it because Jane Fonda is in it.  Some people have a long memory, and a hard time getting over what "Hanoi Jane" did in Vietnam.  Kind of a slap in the face of veterans to cast her as Nancy Regan.

I saw Were the Millers and was pleasantly surprised. It started with raunchy jokes that seemed to be just raunchy but as it progressed it actually became more thoughtful and the jokes got better. I would def recommend it as a good summer comedy.

For no apparent reason I watched both That's My Boy and Men in Black 3 on Sunday.  I guess I was longing for the past a bit, but really no self respecting 34 year old married man should ever watch that combination of movies.  MIB3 wasn't that bad though and That's My Boy was just so wrong that I couldn't stop watching it (it is not a good movie though).

I caught about 5 minutes of that's my boy on cable a couple weeks back. It was literally so painful for me to watch that I had to turn it off. It was like they intentionally made it bad or something. I was appalled with disgust.

Went to see Elysium again, (as I was pleasantly treated by a surprise visit), and liked it even better the second time.

Looking forward to the U.S. release of The Grandmaster, about the life of the incomparable Yip Man ... been waiting for this one.

Saw 'The World's End.' Obviously really good, and really, really funny. Nick Frost kicks a ton of butt. A lot more John Hughesish than I would've thought.

Upon first watch I'd say its a step behind 'Shaun of the Dead' and 'Hot Fuzz.' But I know they're pretty big on 'The Simpsons' model of making sure there's jokes/stuff you'd only get  upon watching it multiple times.

Loved it!  They actually tricked me into thinking I'd misunderstood the title.
Yup

I saw "Life of Pi" again last night...this time on high def tv.  It really needs to be seen on the big screen.  It loses too much of it's aestetic appeal on tv.

That movie really messed me up for a couple of days.  I can't even remember what it was about, I saw it so long ago, but I definitely remember some crazy images.

Yeah, Im gonna pretend to do a trifecta date-night and have the wife and I rewatch SOTD, HF, then BAM! Movie out for Worlds End. I love those first two movies in an unholy kind of way, and I won't be robbed by my shoddy memory the first time around.
