In anticipation of The Penguin show tomorrow on Max, I watched The Batman again. Simply fantastic.

"Speak No Evil" was quite good.  James McAvoy turned in an intense, colorful performance. Horror fans should watch.

The original Euro version is good too,  though I thought the ending was thematically heavy-handed. That one is on AMC+/Shudder

Went  to movie theater last weekend  saw  ALIEN : Romulus

2.5 stars out of 5 .

Wife couldn?t wait for streaming.  ??popcorn was great . :P

That was my reaction as well. Just straight up horror . Jump scares. Nothing thoughtful like Prometheus. But that?s what sells.

Hmmmm. I thought it was really good. Its true it not a movie asking deep questions. But the action was great, the tension was palpable, and the characters were solid.

Prometheus had many strong points but suffers from "JJ Abrams mystery box syndrome". (Abrams collaborator Damon Lindelof was actually one of the writers). It reads like a second draft that hasn't filled certain plot holes.

For instance, why would the Engineers be telling people about the star cluster where their bio-weapons facility is hidden? It doesn't strike me as the sort of info you'd want anyone to have under any circumstances. And why is Shaw's character so convinced these people hold the key to creation, an idea she is using to reaffirm her faith?

There's no evidence to support her theory whatsoever. And yet the film tries to make this flimsy guess the film's emotional core.

Apparently in early drafts Jesus was going to have been an engineer, and his crucifixion spurred the engineers to seek revenge. The studio chickened out and dumped this plotline, even though it would have at least explained why the Engineers had been planning to eradicate humanity.

I find the plot holes and illogical character decisions distracting - which is a shame, as Prometheus is quite good otherwise. The David character alone makes it worth a watch. The dynamic between Weyland, his daughter,  and David really does make a great allegory for the difficult existence of androids in this franchise. And it's not hard to envision how the Weyland-Yutani corporation becomes so completely evil with a man like Weyland as its founder.

Civil War.  The good:  it wasn't preachy.  The bad:  I just didn't care for the narrative thread.  Telling the story through the eyes of journalists on a roadtrip who are given universal access to everything just didn't make any sense to me.

I wouldn't recommend it, but there were a handful of good scenes.  I had heard positive reviews so I was looking forward to it, but it was pretty "meh" in my opinion.

Saw "The Substance" in theaters. Movie of the year (so far) and probably Demi Moores best career performance. I can say for sure i've never seen anything like it and it made for one of the most memorable theater expereinces of my life. The fact that I can still say that about a movie in 2024 gives me hope for the future of film.

However, avoid it if you're squeamish. It takes body horror to a whole other level.

I watched I Saw The TV Glow on Max.  I didn't care for it.  It's avant garde, and the resolution at the end is abrupt and ambiguous.  It's meant to be symbolic, but looking it up on Wikipedia after I watched, I'm not sure that I was the target audience.

"Speak No Evil." Pretty run-of-the-mill thriller, nothing fancy, but kept my attention all the way through. I wouldn't really consider rewatching it as the movie is chock-full of uncomfortable social interactions between the characters that make my skin crawl lol.

7/10 overall.

Also, James McAvoy is insanely good at playing a psycho.

"My Old Ass." Just more slop for Gen Z. It was labeled as a comedy but i cant even believe they can legally call it that...

"Booksmart" is still the worst comedy ive ever seen in theaters but this is up there.

It's also just not a very fun movie to watch. Saw it in theatres a few weeks ago, and I think The Observer review is pretty spot on (except that David Lynch isn't a very weird guy, really) and was very close to my watching experience : https://observer.com/2024/05/i-saw-the-tv-glow-review-moody-interesting-no-fun/

Also, I can't deny it was very well made - and I understand the budget constraints -  but I have a very hard time with films that are 95% medium close-ups.

Watched Gladiator II tonight. Was fun in a mindless, Transformers way. I felt it was strongest when it was trying to be its own movie, and weakest when it was trying to draw too much from the first one for inspiration. Some moments that strained credulity, but if you turn off your cerebrum to try to figure out why it's called "Gladiator II" and focus on letting your parietal lobe absorb everything as "it's a movie about gladiators in Rome" and pretend you never saw the first one, it's not bad

Alien Romulus. It was good. Entertaining as I did not have any expectations going into it.

I also watched The Substance which was off the chain.

Just saw The Young Woman and the Sea on Disney. It?s about the woman that crossed the English Channel in 1920s. I thought it would be depressing but it was actually a pretty good inspiring movie. There are definitely feminist themes to it and those with poor male fragility might feel offended, but I thought they did a good job showing what the culture was like and how they were swimming against the tide (culturally).

It was a good entertaining movie and would strongly recommend it as a rainy day movie.

I went to see Wicked with my family.  I've seen the musical a couple of times, so I knew what to expect.  It was a little bloated and the "fleshing out the plot" scenes were the weakest part of the movie, but overall it was really good.

If you're somebody who doesn't like musicals, then obviously avoid it. But, if you are in the target audience, I think it's worth going to.
