Sheleden Williams is Leon Powe's replacement. So we could all say bye bye to Leon, he's headed to Cleveland. Like every big man that does come to the Celtics (except Mikki Moore), I think Sheldne's career will finally blossom over here with guidance from K.G., Rasheed, Perkins, and Clifford Ray.

And POB. LOL. Maybe POB doesn't count because he was such a bust..

What ever happened to PFs/Cs being 6'11"+ ?
Big Baby - 6'9"
Leon Powe - 6'8"
Williams - 6'9"
Seems to be becoming a habit for the Celtics, and the rest of the league.  Let's sign some nice 7 footers.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Big Baby ain't 6'9". I wonder whether Shelden is either.

We did, and he happened to be the most talented front court player available this offseason.

I believe he measured in at 6'8.5" in shoes.  He also had a great wingspan (7'4.25"), but a short standing reach (8'8") because of his humongous head...

edit: it appears someone beat me to this picture.  Anyone able to photoshop a C's jersey on this?

The average power forward measures 6'7.7'' without shoes(so aprox. 6'9'').

Shelden Williams measures 6'7.5'' without shoes(so just under 6'9'').

The average wingspan for a power forward is around 7'0.7"

Shelden Williams has a wingspan of 7'4.25" (longer than the average for centers)

The average PF weighs around 235.

Shelden Williams weighs in at 250.

Physically(hieght/reach/weight), he's average or better considering most PF's in the NBA. Some are taller of course, but a good amount are smaller.  I'm def not worried about his size playing the 4...I'm not as confident with Williams at the 5 but he could if needed.

Yeah, I think people make too much of a hurrah about height, especially when it comes to PF's.

Our frontcourt is made up of 3 guys that are close to 7 feet or who play like they are 7 feet (Perk, KG, Sheed) and at least one other guy who is a solid size for PF (Shelden).  Add Davis and assume Scal gets traded or doesn't get significant minutes and we only have one guy (Davis) who is truly undersized.

This is a good move.  Unlike last year when POB was supposed to actually contribute, Williams in the worst case will be the 4th big and likely will be the 5th.  He also has the potential to replace what Baby brings if Baby leaves.

this signing was out of left field. who here saw this one coming?

it looks fine. a nice back up pf for the team at a low price and potential upside if the celtics' coaches can work their miracle with him.

i see no real downside on this one.

so, it looks so far to be a roster of...

STARTERS
kg
pierce
perk
allen
rond

BENCH, FIRST WAVE
wallace
house
daniels
big baby

BENCH, MOP UP/GAMBLE TYPES
williams
scal
giddens
allen (for now)
walker (for now)

MYSTERY GUEST, OR SPOT #15
marbury?
lester? (my personal favorite for spot #15 this year)

not bad at all. ainge was done a good job this off season.

I'm reading "this doesn't affect Davis status" as "throughout the offseason, the Celtics have wanted to sign and trade Davis now while his value is highest to pick up some other needed parts, and that's still the case." I'd strongly prefer Davis to Williams, but if we use Davis to upgrade the backup point or wing positions and bring Williams in to fill the 4th big spot vacated by Davis, I can handle it. If we keep em both and use Scal and TA to bring in help at the backup 3 or 1, I'm cool with that too.

Makes sense.
