Shelden is our replacement for Powe. Similar size and game. Bonus: His wife, who is wicked cute, and extremely talented hoopster.

i didn't know much about williams. from reading everyone's posts it seems like at least he hustles, which is probably the most important thing for someone in his position (bench big).

but i really hope leon doesn't end up on the cavs. because if we meet them in the playoffs, i'd expect leon to absolutely kill this guy.

I totally saw this signing coming, and I've been calling it all summer. I like what Williams adds to our club: Nice strength, nice character, and nice work ethic.

def a guy who has underachieved so far as a pro - hard to believe he was a #5 pick

but we welcome him with open arms and hope he comes in and gives us another big boy to rebound, defend and score some clean up points

Nice pick up, Williams defense and rebounding is just what we need off the bench. I'm sure Doc/C.Ray will having over achieving during his tenure with us. In my opinion this also means Baby isn't coming back.

What ever happened to PFs/Cs being 6'11"+ ?
Big Baby - 6'9"
Leon Powe - 6'8"
Williams - 6'9"
Seems to be becoming a habit for the Celtics, and the rest of the league.  Let's sign some nice 7 footers.

http://www.draftexpress.com/nba-pre-draft-measurements/?page=avepos&year=All

The average power forward measures 6'7.7'' without shoes(so aprox. 6'9'').

Shelden Williams measures 6'7.5'' without shoes(so just under 6'9'').

The average wingspan for a power forward is around 7'0.7"

Shelden Williams has a wingspan of 7'4.25" (longer than the average for centers)

The average PF weighs around 235.

Shelden Williams weighs in at 250.

Physically(hieght/reach/weight), he's average or better considering most PF's in the NBA. Some are taller of course, but a good amount are smaller.  I'm def not worried about his size playing the 4...I'm not as confident with Williams at the 5 but he could if needed.

Yeah, I think people make too much of a hurrah about height, especially when it comes to PF's.

Our frontcourt is made up of 3 guys that are close to 7 feet or who play like they are 7 feet (Perk, KG, Sheed) and at least one other guy who is a solid size for PF (Shelden).  Add Davis and assume Scal gets traded or doesn't get significant minutes and we only have one guy (Davis) who is truly undersized.

At least he can elevate. Seems to dunk well. BBD is always pushing it over the rim. Not very reassuring. Not the best athlete. Was watching video and was like at least he has a good left hand, until I realized it was his right. Actually his left is not bad. Solid fundementals. Two hands unless you are dunking it.

Agreed.  That's what I said on the blog thread.

OK so maybe he is more of a Scott Pollard move than a Leon replacement. Unfortunately, I doubt he will be as entertaining.

Good back up all in all.

If BBD resigns, then fine, Williams is a good pickup for your "goon at the end of the bench" guy.  But if this is our replacement for BBD then this sucks big time.  Wiliams hasn't done squat in this league.  There's a reason couldn't get regular minutes in Atlanta and then bounced around after that.

I hope I'm wrong, but this looks like a classic case of penny-wise pound-foolish.  They got Williams for the vet min, but BBD would only command about $3-4MM which is not that much more to pay in the grand scheme of things.  C's have already gone the cheap route with POB, M.Moore, Pollard etc.  IT DOESN'T WORK.  You get what you pay for in this world.
