It's a decent signing; Williams will be serviceable for us, and not the "joke fourth big" that Danny's been so fond of in the past. I like him at the 4.

Danny hasn't signed any joke fourth bigs, only joke sixth bigs.
We had Perk, KG, Powe, Davis, and Scal (and PJ Brown for a few months) before Mikki and POB.

Don't forget Pollard.

Family income must not be a prob for Shelden. Is a good move by him to get on a quality team and improve his skills. Had a work out with the Lakers given his wife's gig in LA, so sounds like he is tired of getting bounced around and wants to be with a quality team.

this is awful. anytime you sign a duke player, it is a terrible thing. like most duke players, he cannot play out of the little coach K cocoon and has been a colossal bust in the pros. we say no to leon powe and bring in this lazy clown? what a joke. this is a terrible signing.

don't think with your heart, think with your head... Leon can't play this year Shelden can.

What ever happened to PFs/Cs being 6'11"+ ?
Big Baby - 6'9"
Leon Powe - 6'8"
Williams - 6'9"
Seems to be becoming a habit for the Celtics, and the rest of the league.  Let's sign some nice 7 footers.

all the nice 7 footers are gone...if you're 7 feet and have coordination and are under 300 pounds and 40 years of age, you're under contract in the nba

Williams gives us 6 more hard fouls on Shaq and Howard in the playoffs. Very nice pickup!

based off of this 2006 story:

"Williams, O'Bryant and Sene Stop in at Waltham
By Peter F. Stringer
Celtics.com
June 3, 2006

Big man workouts continued in Waltham on Saturday, as Shelden Williams, Patrick O'Bryant and Mouhamed Saer Sene worked out along with Torin Francis, the Boston native who stuck around for a second day to round out the foursome at The Sports Authority Training Center at HealthPoint.

Williams, who graduated from Duke this spring, is the most well known of the four prospects, but in this workout he was certainly the shortest. Williams is listed at 6'9", while the other three come in at seven feet. And he's already worked out against O'Bryant and Sene in several of his previous workouts to this point, and generally played against the tallest opposing player at Duke, so he's used to the challenge.

"A lot of my workouts have been against centers. That's something I'll have to get used to on the next level, switches and match-ups like that," said Williams, who said he considers himself a power forward.

Williams said he isn't worried about trying to show any specific skills in his workouts, and thinks he'll go somewhere between four and 14 in the draft.

"People have seen me play all four years so I'm just trying to go out there and do what I'm capable of doing," Williams said.

Meanwhile, O'Bryant said that he's hoping to demonstrate his "length" to teams in his workouts. He also said that while he doesn't pay attention to the various mock drafts that float around the Internet, it's impossible to ignore it completely.

Sene only began playing basketball three years ago, and his English is still in the development stages as well. But he was able to confirm that his wingspan is 7'8". With very few legit seven footers in the draft, Sene could end up in as high as the middle of the first round"

if Williams doesn't work out, Sene's next

Also, how freaking ridiculous is it to say that Duke players aren't successful in the NBA?

Make a list of the players who have gone on to play in the NBA from Duke - there are a lot of quality players on that list.

true: Brand, Boozer, Hill, Laettner, Deng, Maggette, etc

the only major bust: Hurley, Jay Williams (injury)... and then a couple guys were just picked too high, but have NBA talent: Dunleavy, Sheldon Williams (should have been a 15-25 pick)

Hmm, seems to me Elton Brand and Luol Deng are the only Dukies that really lived up to their hype.

Laettner, if you remember, was thought of highly enough to land on the Dream Team.  That guy turned out to be a total stiff in the NBA.

Same goes for other highly touted Dukies: Cherokee Parks, JJ Reddick, Bobby Hurly, Jay Williams and dare I say Sheldon Williams.  These are all guys that led successful Duke teams that never came close to cracking an NBA starting lineup.

Even Boozer, Maggette, Hill and Dunleavy - who each are solid contributors - didn't live up to their 'potential'.

Considering Dukes strangle-hold on the college game, I'd expect their best players to have more success in the pros.

Hill more than lived up to his potential. He simply got an injured career, but until then he was a tripple double machine.

Boozer? Before his injury that sidelined him for most of last year, he put together two consecutive monster seasons for Utah. Other than those, he has been a pretty good player. 53% career from the field, scoring 17 pergame and improving... hardly not living up to his potential for a 2nd rounder.

Are you kidding me? Laettner a stiff? I'll be the first to say he couldn't live up to the hype, but he was a one-time All-Star who had career averages of 13 and 7. That's not the definitiion of a stiff.
