The Red Sox are on the verge of acquiring catcher Victor Martinez from the Indians, according to a major-league source.

News of the deal first was reported by Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

The deal is straight-up between the Red Sox and Indians. No third team is involved.

From Rosenthal, id think its Buchholz but i hope its something like Masterson/Lars.

If it is for Buchholz, then it is a massive overpay. I am not even a big believer in Martinez either and to me, this is a very desperate move if we have to give them Buchholz. Lets hope this is not the case.

2:17 p.m.: According to the FoxSports report, the Martinez deal is straight-up between the Red Sox and Indians with no third team is involved. The report also notes that the deal will "almost certainly end" the Red Sox's pursuit of Gonzalez, who is likely to remain in San Diego.

Shocking...

Laroche is going to be flipped to another team. I really hope we still try to go after Halladay, they definately have the pieces. If you are trading Clay you are going all out to win now anyways so why not give up Ellsbury/Redick/Bowden/Navarro for Halladay/Rios.

Im just glad we will see less of Lowell at 3B.

I don't think it is a massive overpay.  Martinez is an elite hitter.  Bucholtz may be good (although I think there are still enough red flags about his mental makeup to not bet on that), but if thats all you need to give up for a hitter like Martinez, you need to do it.

clay bucholtz- riding the hype of a no hitter like TA rides a 10 game streak in 2005.

Clay's a good pitcher, but from all reports (and posts on barstool and other sites like deadspin) his work ethic is pretty much:

1. do i start tomorrow?
2. nope, LETS GET HAMMERED AND GET MY PICTURE TAKEN PASSED OUT AT 4 IN THE MORNING!!!!! WOOOOOOO
3. come into the park hung over
4. see step one, if answer is no, repeat.

Im not surprised the sox always bring him up first in trade discussions, i think the sox internal eval of clay is "great stuff, dumb head, awful work ethic"

What do they do with LaRoche then?

Joe Demayo just told me he heard Mets will be obtaining Adam LaRoche from Boston – details to follow. Working on finding out more info.

Adam we hardly knew you, ill miss you so much. He is the new Will Solomon.

I like getting Victor alot, cheap, versatile, and is a GREAT clubhouse guy.

That's a great question.  I would be shocked if he is still on the Sox roster at the end of the season.  If they don't trade him today (which is most likely), I think he is an option as a waiver trade.

Really though, I don't know why another contender wouldn't jump at adding a player like Laroche, even as a bench player.
