10:22am: ESPN's Jayson Stark says the Red Sox still "have pokers in the fire" on Gonzalez, Martinez, and Roy Halladay.  Stark continues to suggest the Sox may try to include a third team to faciliate one of these deals.

The Tigers acquired pitcher Jarrod Washburn from the Mariners, according to Mike Salk of ESPN radio in Seattle.

Weird that the Mariners just brought in Snell and Wilson and then trade Washburn.

I guess they figured they needed to sell high with Jarrod.

I can almost guarentee that by the end of the day either Gonzalez or Martinez will be calling Boston home.

We definitly could. I think we probably have enough prospects to get all 3 but I dont think we should
You should never trade all of your good prospects for a bunch of veterans. A few years down the road it kills your team.

Ya I agree yesterdays moves implied they were buyers and now the go and sell?  Maybe its the heat wave thats causing them to act irrationally.  But hey at least the Yankees didnt get him.

And Faf I agree you shouldent I was just pointing out I think if we emptied out the farm we COULD probably get all three. But ya, you shouldent.

I agree, the Red Sox need something to spark their team.

I'm just glad the Cubs got rolling after the all-star break. I'm much happier with their huge payroll finally hitting and just getting some left handed pitching. If they were still sinking I think they'd be pressured to make a short sighted move.

From what I read most experts don't think too much of what the Pirates got back. It could be they just thought they were getting great value both ways. Who knows, they're 5 1/2 back. So while they're "in" it. I don't forsee them in the playoffs.

I really think the Sox could get V-mart for Bowden and masterson. I dont feel they need to give Clevland Bucholtz. There for I think they could possably get Halladay and V-mart.
I really hope they get Gonzo. I would rather give up the farm for him

Also, Accordint to the elias sports bureau, Laroche doesnt make the cut for a Type B Free agent so the Sox will not receive compensation if he leaves in the offseason

"11:14 a.m.: The Globe's Tony Massarotti just checked in to report that according to well-placed baseball source, the Red Sox and Padres are continuing discussions this morning about Adrian Gonzalez. It is unclear which Red Sox prospects the Padres are pursuing, but considering that San Diego lacks depth in its farm system, there is the possibility that the Red Sox could supply San Diego a collection of players while hanging on to some of their elite prospects."

THats very interesting, wonder what itd take.

Even with the ortiz saga that post just put a smile on my face, A Gon without giving up big prospects, seems like a pipedream though

The Mariners rejected offers from six different teams for young pitcher Felix Hernandez, according to ESPN's Jayson Stark and Peter Gammons.  GM Jack Zduriencik admitted he listened, but didn't find anything even worth discussing.

Hernandez, just 23 years old, has a 2.79 ERA in 145.3 innings this year.  He's under team control through 2011, but has yet to sign a long-term contract.

I'd be happy with any of them.  Halladay would probably be best, since he'd give them the ability to have 3 ace-quality pitchers on the staff.  Even with a mediocre offense, I don't see how you beat the Sox in 7 games if you have to face Halladay, Beckett, and Lester twice each.

Gonzalez would probably be my second choice, since he'd provide that elite power bat; however, Martinez wouldn't be bad either.  His ability to play catcher and first base would give the Sox a ton of flexibility.  While he may not have the pop of Gonzalez, his ability to provide better offense than Varitek (and certainly Kottaras) would be an upgrade for the Sox in the games he played at catcher.

ESPN's Peter Gammons reports that the Marlins "appear to be moving closer" to a Nick Johnson trade.  Last we heard, the Fish offered pitcher Ryan Tucker to the Nationals and asked Washington to pay part of Johnson's contract (he has $2MM remaining).  At the same time, Danny Knobler of CBSSports says the Marlins are growing frustrated with the trade talks and may move on.

Johnson, a free agent after the season, currently projects to fall short of Type B status, so it makes sense for the Nats to take what they can get.  At the same time it'd be big for the Marlins to put a .408 OBP player in front of Hanley Ramirez.

Marlins should trade for some fans.
