Everybody struggles with something, understanding is fine.
But once you recognize your weaknesses it is YOUR responsability to make the required changes, that will allow you to exist in society, without having a direct negative impact.
Not everyone elses job to keep getting screwed, just because you cant behave.
Let me see in my world, there is accountability.
If we let everything, that anybody has trouble with be accepted we have no civil society.
Yes he knew what he was doing.
If he were a stand up man, he would have turned himself in, and this whole thing would be reading much differently.
Probably made bail without cuffs, and never spent more than an hour at the station, with no witnesses.
rewarding bad behavior, breeds more bad behavior, it is not that complex.
Don.

What a wonderful world you live in.   Can I join it?  ::)

You talk about how a person should RECOGNIZE his weaknesses and fix them....But if that person has a problem and is unable to fix them 'cause he DOESN'T SEE THE PROBLEM(much like with Alcoholics), then what?

Walker has a PROBLEM with Gambling.  It's that simple.  Otherwise, he wouldn't have put down about 1 MILLION dollars to play....AT THREE(not ONE!) CASINOS!!  AND HE WAS CAUGHT IN YET *ANOTHER* CASINO!!

"If he were a stand up man, he would've turned himself in...."

>>> If he were THINKING with his Brains and not his wallet, he wouldn't even BE in this situation but that's what happens with COMPULSIVE GAMBLERS.

But now Toine has another problem :

Each Felony charge comes with a potential term of 1 to 4 years in PRISON!!  So he could at least be looking at a 3-year PRISON TERM!!!    :o

This is a disaster of epic proportions for Toine.  I hope his Lawyer comes up with something, 'cause otherwise the only color jersey Toine will be seen next time will be ORANGE with a long Number.

PSquared, you are just going to be hitting your head against a brick wall on this one. There is just a segment of people who look at mental illness as laziness and weakness and not a disease. They look at gambling and alcoholism as problems that people should just snap out of and not seriously addictive compulsions caused by underlying mental illnesses and so on. There is just a sector of people where who believe that depression is a feeling and not a real human physiological problem. They'll never be convinced until they see it or experience it up close.

There's a reason why dementia and Alzheimer's patients all start becoming belligerent and then start hoarding things and become paranoid and possessive and then start repeating themselves over and over and start forgetting the present while the past stands out to them. There's a reason why the many forms of people feeling depressed cause people to be tired and feel worthless and turn to self medication and solitude. It's because they are symptoms to underlying medical problems and not a behavior issue.

But some people will just never get it. Believe me, I've tried on this site and some just don't understand.

Nick,
I understand your feelings on the issue, but let me ask you this:  Have you been addicted to gambling?  Or alcohol?

As someone who has been addicted (to gambling, not alcohol, but a couple of other things that are probably worse) and no longer is, my own personal opinion is that these things ARE mental willpower issues and NOT diseases.  You can choose to believe me or not as to whether I'm telling the truth, but cancer is a disease, sickle-cell anemia is a disease.

Gambling is not.  It is a choice, and can lead to a vicious cycle/downward spiral, but one can simply STOP if they truly want to.

I have learned this the hard way.  I have received no treatment or pharmaceuticals for this condition.  And I'm better now.

So no need to get on a high-horse (on either end, not directed at Nick) about this.  You can have your own view on it.  You're never going to change someone's beliefs through text, albeit however well articulated, on the Internet.  It's useless.

Save your energy, go outside.

On that note...  time to golf.  Have a good one
God bless and good night!

and for the record - I am one of those people who don't consider depression a 'disease' either.  We've had this conversation before.

I dated someone who was 'clinically depressed'...and no, I'm no longer with her.  ;D
God bless and good night!

Walker got his due.
No special treatment for celebs.
I know I would have been in cuffs, if I wrote 800,000 in bad checks.
Martha was guilty as well.
His problem appears the same as a lot of young people.
Single parent familys, with a parent not willing to be the bad guy and do their job.
He has a terrible sense of entittlement and now should get everything he deserves.
This is not a victimless crime.
He is appearently a thief, and needs to be treated as so.
With his attitude, he is lucky he had BBall skills, or he might of already been dead.
I cant believe people think that spending more money than you have is some mental disorder, it is simple math.
He knew what he was doing, and made his choices, now he can live the life he has worked so hard to earn.
Don.

So let me get this straight, dmopower.   Since he "knew what he was doing", you're implying that he purposely wanted to write bad checks and get arrested?  ::)

If you don't believe that Gambling is NOT a mental disorder, READ THIS and then tell me that again :

Toine needs help.

Yeah, he definitely wanted to write bad checks. That's why he did

Then I guess he suffers the consequences of his actions, like maybe homelessness or something.

I am actually speaking from experience,as I am an alcoholic, I realized this when I was 27.
I fixed this, made personel choices to avoid certain things.
I was clean for 6 months.
Since then I drink anytime I want, not any time I need.
I drink an average of one 12 pack every 2 months.
I can forgive anyone who is addicted to anything until they are in the 5th grade.
This is when we learn the word addiction.
Read the word addiction in the dictionairy very carefuly.
Once you try anything that is addicting, you have made your first choice to potentialy ruin your life, but you made that one sober.
YOUR responsability.
I can't believe that you want him to get out of it.
If this is ruining his life, don't you think that this might just save his life.
This could be the best thing that ever happened to him.
If you think I am not wishing him the best, you are reading the wrong post.
I wan't his life to improve based on good decisions he made.
Not screwing other people out of money and then no recourse.
All I said was that he himself put him here, and no one else.
I guess what im getting at is this.
You wan't to forgive him and give him a break.
At the expense of the cassinos, or maybe society, so the everyday joe can complain about special treatment.
I wan't him held accountable, and pay them back while getting him on the right path.
I just don't believe hopeing, wishing, or praying is nearly as useful as a little example and push to help himself.
No BABY talk, AW is a full grown man.
Besides he has the money to have it much easier than anyone below 250,000 a year sallary would have it.
I guess I would like to know at what income bracket is ok to start stealing, and not be held accountable.
With the money he has made in his career just nba, I would have to had wrote a bad check for 10,000.00 dollars and not known I dident have the money in the bank to be equal.
That is never going to happen!!!
You say get well AW.
I say get it together AW.
Good day.

Don.

I don't believe anyone mentioned him not paying his debts. I think all anyone wished for is him getting the proper help to get his addiction under control. All debts MUST be paid and if he can't pay them monetarily then he has to pay it with a debt to society by spending time in jail.

Addictions and mental illnesses do not excuse someone for their actions unless it is extremely severe mental illness that is incapacitating to understanding reality(schizophrenia, Alzheimer's, severe bi-polar disease, dissociative identity disorder). People are still responsible for the consequences of their decisions and their actions.

Walker has a problem but he musty make amends or go to jail. I just hope he pays his debts and uses whatever other money he has to get himself help.

This is the problem with our society. We are too soft and look for ways to feel sorry for people who screw their lives up on their own.

I do hope the best for AW, Ireally do and I hope he can get his life back together.

But it seems like whenever someone does something wrong it is because they have a "illness". I recognize that there are people who have mental illness and have a hard time getting by day to day. But now everyone is given an excuse for their self-destructive actions. If Hitler were alive today he would have an out becasue mom didn't hug him enough. If you right out that amount of bad checks such as AW did, there is no way that he didnt know what he was doing. He knew exactly what he was doing and now he has to pay and he should pay.
Back to wanting Joe fired.

Well good for you but...

This disputes your "Gambling is not a disorder/disease" argument.   And this is from REAL DOCTORS.

thank you nickagneta, well said and unfortunately pretty accurate portrayal of how mental problems are frequently viewed in the US.

partly due to the cult/fetish of individualism that is injected into many peoples' brains in the US.
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.
