I no a lot of people don't look at gambling as a disease but it is a horrible addiction that probably warrants support and assistance and not jokes. I find this sad really and feel bad for the guy. I might have hated Walker's game but he was one hell of a great representative for the Celtics in and around the inner city during his time here.

It is sad.  He was my favorite Celtics player for several years.

Rotoworld has learned that Antoine Walker was arrested Wednesday night at Harrah's Casino in South Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

The charges stemmed from over $800,000 in gambling debts. He was led out of the high stakes area in handcuffs by Douglas County police in front of a celebrity-heavy crowd. Walker was in Tahoe to play in the American Century Classic, a celebrity golf tournament. Walker is currently in a Douglas County jail. Bail has been set at $87,000.

Thats kind of BS if they led him out in cuffs.  They easily could have just led him out without the cuffs, I dont think he was a threat to start fighting the cops or fleeing

There was a warrant out for him, he was being arrested for 3 felonies, nonviolent ones but still felonies.  Why should he not have been handcuffed if he was under arrest?

The police do not need to handcuff everyone who has an arrest warrant.  the handcuffs are used for the officers safety or to prevent a person from hurting themselves or others.  If there was no indication that Antoine was going to put up a fight, then there is no need.  If he would have gone with them willingly (and I am assuming he would have), there would have been no reason to handcuff him and walk him out.

EDIT:
Quote
It must be recognized that courts have consistently held that handcuffing is a use of force and as such must meet the reasonableness requirements of Graham v. Connor. The three-part test looks at (1) the severity of the offense suspect; (2) whether the suspect posed an immediate threat to the officer or others; and (3) whether the suspect was actively resisting or attempting to evade arrest by flight.

Since I am assuming 2 and 3 arent an issue, the only other thing is the severity.  not paying back a marker of that size is serious, but it is likely not the kind of serious that would necessitate cuffs.

(I didnt check the status of this case, just found it in a 2 second google search.  IF someone knows it is incorrect - Roy - feel free to correct me)

Cuffs are also SOP if the arresting officers feel they could not physically handle the perp if he were to become violent. Walker is a big boy.

You're right that they don't need to, I just don't think it's a such a huge deal that they did.  Maybe it wasn't absolutely necessary but it wasn't excessive force or anything like that.

This is really too bad though, Antoine was my favorite...he clearly had gambling issues though, I remember hearing about his all-nighters at Mohegan with Michael Jordan (notorious for his major gambling issues) in the late 90s.

I really don't care if they cuffed him. Don't rip businesses off for 800k and you won't get cuffed.

Yea they are.  But again, as I said, I dont think walker was going to throw down and fight in the middle of a celeb packed casino.  I am not saying the officers are going to be in trouble for doing it, only that it is bs, because it wasnt needed.

If Walker had arrest warrants out for a shooting of someone, than I would have no problem, but the guy has shown absolutely zero vicious propensity ...

Oh yea, I dont think it was excessive force, because they are entitled to do it, I just dont think it was necessary.
