What I want to know is, how can they be "progressing"?
It's a pretty simple conversation: "Grant, the most we can offer you is 2 years and roughly $4 million. What do you think?"
I mean, there's absolutely nothing to negotiate. It's a take-it-or-leave-it thing.
There are sign and trade possibilities.
I can't imagine that Phoenix would want to take back salary from us, though.
i could see PHX being interested in TA or Scal and maybe a pick or cash.
Exactly right IMO, ssspence. They (Phoenix) may even want to add more to the deal in the form of another contract from their end.
TA, Scal, Giddens, a future pick, and cash for Hill and Barbosa would work.
I know, I'm dreaming. I actually think the time delay thing with Hill is him and his agent shopping for contract length as well as amount. As much as I want him on our bench, I cant blame him for that. If he wants PT and a chance at the ring, he will get much more here than NY or Phoenix, otherwise he would rather have the money than the Championship. Hard to believe.
Come on, guys. Phoenix isn't going to take back the salary of mediocre-to-poor players for a late draft pick (they sell theirs, remember?) and they're not going to dump one of their few commodities for Tony and Scal.
Roy, I think Phoenix still has to field a roster with at least 12-13 bodies dont they? It is perfectly plausible for them to combine Grant Hill with another player who has a longer contract in a trade where they take back smaller and shorter contracts, not to mention cash. That saves them money as well as brings in cash. The fact that they sell their picks means they could sell anyone else's for cash as well doesnt it?
Trading their 9 million for someone else's 7 million in contracts, picks and cash will always makes sense from a business standpoint. I am surprised you dont see this.
Please don't talk to me like I'm an idiot. I understand that $9 million is larger than $7 million.
However, Phoenix is not going to dump Barbosa -- a legitimate player -- for Scal and Tony, in my opinion. They're pretty much solved their luxury tax issues for this season, to the point where they're not in a bind to shed salary.
However, they're also not in a hurry to *add* salary, because they're right about at the luxury tax threshold. Why, then, would they put themselves in a poorer financial situation when faced with the choice between 1) letting Grant Hill walk (meaning there is no further financial commitment) and 2) trading for Tony and/or Scal (at least a $2.5 million commitment)? It makes no sense.
