With all the talk of Hill leaning towards Boston, then NY, then Phoenix; watch him sign with a team like DC.

I can't imagine that Phoenix would want to take back salary from us, though.

Taking back some of our expiring deals along with Giddens or Walker and a couple of second round picks might be attractive to them.

Mike

Why?  Why take back an expiring contract, when they can just clear Hill's salary for free?  They're close (or over) the luxury tax -- they don't want to take back any salary at all.

And why would the want second round picks?  Heck, they don't even want *first* round picks.
I really sighed when I read that one. Wanting expiring contracts to replace one that already expired? People talk so much about expiring deals that they start thinking that they are valuable in themselves.

What I don't understand in Tanguay's last tweet ("Doc just told Greg that PHX is more of an obstacle. For the Celts to get Grant Hill as oppossed to NY") is how Phoenix can be more of an obstacle for us than NY, because it basically means two things :

1. Grant Hill is not appealed by the big contract of the Knicks.
2. His wife is OK if they do not move to NYC.

Then, I know Hill would play more minutes in Phoenix than in Beantown, that he's lived there for the past two years but still... if the money and his wife's careers are not his priorities, I think Boston appears as the place where he should go since he wants to be valuable to his team and win a ring. Plus he would get the same salary than in Phoenix.

Sometimes a guy is just comfortable and doesn't want to move.  There are plenty of instances where this happens.

This really confuses me. I'd think after missing so much time to injury Grant would want a shot at a ring. But he seems to not care. Maybe we don't want him after all. I'd think a ring really redeems his career a lot, but if he wants to go out as a coulda been then that's up to him

What I want to know is, how can they be "progressing"?

It's a pretty simple conversation:  "Grant, the most we can offer you is 2 years and roughly $4 million.  What do you think?"

I mean, there's absolutely nothing to negotiate.  It's a take-it-or-leave-it thing.

There are sign and trade possibilities.

I can't imagine that Phoenix would want to take back salary from us, though.

i could see PHX being interested in TA or Scal and maybe a pick or cash.
Exactly right IMO, ssspence. They (Phoenix) may even want to add more to the deal in the form of another contract from their end.

TA, Scal, Giddens, a future pick, and cash for Hill and Barbosa would work.

I know, I'm dreaming. I actually think the time delay thing with Hill is him and his agent shopping for contract length as well as amount. As much as I want him on our bench, I cant blame him for that. If he wants PT and a chance at the ring, he will get much more here than NY or Phoenix, otherwise he would rather have the money than the Championship. Hard to believe.

Come on, guys.  Phoenix isn't going to take back the salary of mediocre-to-poor players for a late draft pick (they sell theirs, remember?) and they're not going to dump one of their few commodities for Tony and Scal.
Roy, I think Phoenix still has to field a roster with at least 12-13 bodies dont they? It is perfectly plausible for them to combine Grant Hill with another player who has a longer contract in a trade where they take back smaller and shorter contracts, not to mention cash. That saves them money as well as brings in cash. The fact that they sell their picks means they could sell anyone else's for cash as well doesnt it?

Trading their 9 million for someone else's 7 million in contracts, picks and cash will always makes sense from a business standpoint. I am surprised you dont see this.

I always liked Grant Hill, but if he signs with the Knicks, it means he couldn't much care less about winning.  Really, turning down his only legit shot at a title at this stage in his career?  A sad indictment.

Right now Phoenix is at $75.9MM worth of contracts before a buyout of Ben Wallace, which means that they are over the cap by $4.7MM and are paying a $9.4MM luxury tax bill.

A S/T seems highly unlikely UNLESS we offer Ray Allen for Jason Richardson and Grant Hill, which I wouldn't personally do.

Please don't talk to me like I'm an idiot.  I understand that $9 million is larger than $7 million.

However, Phoenix is not going to dump Barbosa -- a legitimate player -- for Scal and Tony, in my opinion.  They're pretty much solved their luxury tax issues for this season, to the point where they're not in a bind to shed salary.

However, they're also not in a hurry to *add* salary, because they're right about at the luxury tax threshold.  Why, then, would they put themselves in a poorer financial situation when faced with the choice between 1) letting Grant Hill walk (meaning there is no further financial commitment) and 2) trading for Tony and/or Scal (at least a $2.5 million commitment)?  It makes no sense.

I agree that a sign-and-trade isn't going to happen.  One thing to keep in mind, though: they'll save some money is they waive Pavlovic; I think only the first $1.5 million of his deal is guaranteed.

Barbosa is only making 6.6 million, not 9 million. Kinda ironic that you didn't see that.  ;D

Phx can fill spots with league subsidized minimum contracts.
