I guess this quote was from Tuesday, but I didn't see this until now.  I apologize if it's old news, or if it's been discussed already.

Quote
“I know I’m capable of having games where I can score 30 or 40 points,” he said. “It’s just tough to get a lot of time on a team like this. But it will be a different rotation in the playoffs, and I’m just continuing to build on what I’m learning.”

Link

Huh?  Is Starbury asking for more minutes?  Or is he blaming his own poor performance on the teammates he plays with on the second unit?  What about the rotation in the playoffs is going to change, to boost his 27.9% shooting?

This probably isn't a huge deal, but this seems to be perhaps the first small twinge of the "I'm not getting my points" Starbury that we all know and loathe.

He seems content to me, but I think he's trying to remind everybody that he's still a legend in his own mind.  Heck, he was still a legend in half of the celticsblog posters' minds a month ago.  Too bad Marbury hasn't been good in years.

the guy can't shoot a ball in the ocean right now...and he wants minutes.  what a waste this was getting him.  he's been plain awful...along with Minney Moore.

I don't think so Roy.  It's a toned down version of what Cassell was saying last year (minus the 30-40 point part).  It IS hard to get playing time on this team when everyone is healthy, and I think he's just saying that that is the reality of the situation and he has to deal with it as best he can.
Yup

The dumb thing about the comment is that just about any player in the league is capable of occasionally scoring 30 if they take 25 shots a game.  Maybe that mindset is why Marbury has never won a playoff series.

Are you reading the quote to mean that Starbury thinks he'll get *fewer* minutes in the playoffs, and he's happy with that?  That's not how I interpreted it, especially later in the article where he talks about getting more minutes with the first unit.  I think he's expecting more time, not less.

Like you, I'm hoping that Starbury's minutes go down in the playoffs, especially if he continues to play like this.  17 minutes per game is more than he deserves.  I think he's had plenty of time to get adjusted; if he's out of shape, it's because he put in very little work for the past year and a half.  What I see from that quote is a guy starting to make excuses for his poor play, and who is delusional about his skills.

If he is part of the playoff rotation then he'll get more minutes as it's a shorter rotation and he'll be playing with more of the starters when he's in there, so he'll probably look better when he plays.

Under that scenario, I'm assuming he and Eddie are competing for minutes.  I really hope that he doesn't take Eddie's place, like Cassell did last year.  Who knows what Doc is thinking in this regard, though.

Or a guy who's confronting the significant erosion of his skills and the onrushing end of his career.

You're right, Roy. TP. He's getting too many minutes for his contributions, and he certainly hasn't earned his way into a shorter playoff rotation shooting rec league numbers. I'm not 100 percent convinced that this is the best we'll get from him, but the signs are not encouraging. The evidence is enough to entertain the notion that Starbury is finished.

But he's the best point guard in the nba, right?

not even close, but thanks to our fron office ignoring the problem of gabe pruitt not being a good back up PG and eddie not being one either, he was the best avalaible PG at the deadline.

Listen, i know me, coach bo, and some others take soem flak for this, but danny had a bad offseasn, and im not talking about posey, i was with him on letting him walk from an analytical standpoint.

But to let your MLE player walk and then not address

1.) a pass first PG who can defend to run the second unit
2.) take on a project player as your 4/5 backup rather than someone who is at least NBA ready
3. not addressing the SF void posey left.

is a bad offseason. I still think danny's a really good GM, but i don't see how you can argue he gave this team the tools it needs. Mikki moore and marbury are products of getting caught with no other options, which should not have happened.

He's probably thinking that Eddie isn't a pg. Maybe he'll play them situationally. Eddie will be competing with Tony and Marbury for minutes, but he hasn't shown enough that he'll always get minutes over either of them.
