The cancer thing gets thrown around too much. The real truth is that most people are not special human beings who show their best in the face of disaster. Most people kind of go with the flow.

Put Marbury on some dysfuntional poorly run franchise and you get a dysfunctional problematic player. But much like Randy Moss in the best situation you might get someone surprisingly good..

You gotta think Marbury will be on his best behavior and if he acts up just a little bit, Celts would just cut him. This team is too strong for Marbury to mess up.

Yeah, it's really that simple.  Garnett will take charge and get in the scumbag's face if he acts up....Just like he did with Blount and Ricky...Worked great there, didn't it?  Except it isn't.  Cancer is far from overused in this case.  What this clown represents is a first round exit.

Danny should fire himself.

But the Nets/Suns both traded him and immediately became NBA title contenders for several years. Part of that is the talent they brought in to replace him, but by all reports he was a toxic teammate in both organizations. Neither was particularly dysfunctional while he was there or after he was gone.

A quote from the NYTimes from a Nets teammate:

In 1999, with the Nets, one Nets player said this about Marbury:

“He gets on Kerry Kittles and Keith. He doesn’t respect them as players, and I think that hurts us. I hate to see expressions on guys’ faces now. When they walk into the locker room, their heads are down and nobody talks to anybody.

“He’s a great player. You can’t take nothing away from him. But we see right through him. Maybe it’s not even his fault. They put him in the driver’s seat, handed over the keys and said, ‘Make us go.’ At 22 years old, that’s a lot to ask.”
So he used to get on Kittles and Van Horn. Is he going to get on KG, Paul, and Ray? Doubt it.

I really respect Adrian Woj as a writer, but at the same time I have to take his viewpoint with a grain of salt.

Since Woj has covered both the Nets and Knicks, I think it's safe to assume he seen the worst of Marbury, which unfortunately is the norm.

I did like the line saying that Marbury will "...have to find Steph." Although, saying Marbury is a loser seems over the top and perhaps more of a personal shot than an assesment.
"      “I can make a trade every day if I want to, but that's not going to help us. A trade that would get us better rarely comes along. They're very difficult to find. Good trades are very difficult in our league and don't happen very often.”

For what reason?  His steller winning record over his stellar career?

Which is great...KG was a loser too (what was his playoff record).  So was PP.  So was RA.  Rondo and Perk were picked in the 20s, and couldn't possibly be good enough to help this team win (bob ryan "if this was a 3 on 3 league, this team would win but they have the worst team in the league 3-12").  And this team was going to be terrible (just turrrrable) defensively.

That is why we want him.  send us your cast offs, and loud mouths.  We will take them and win another championship.  Thank you very much.

So will Gabe Pruitt. So would any number of PGs we could bring in here. I'm sorry but I refuse to believe that Stephon Marbury is our best option just because he has a little overhyped talent.

A "little" overhyped talent? ****. Stephon Marbury has SICK - SICK talent. That's the whole issue with him. He is total NBA freak the kind of guy who seems born with a basketball in his hand. Its guys like Marbury who make it seem as if rec players like me are playing an entirely different sport.

The guy has averages of 20 points and 8 assists.. How many guys in the NBA do that? Those are CAREER AVERAGES. The last PG we had who even came close to that was Sherm Douglas. You have to go all the way back to Tiny Archibald to find those kind of numbers. And you know what - Marbury's averages are STILL better then Tiny's career averages.

Your losing all kinds of credibility with lame insults claiming Marbury had a little overhyped talent. <g> The guy is a ridiculously good pick up for us. Remember he is only 31 years old.

The only downside to this acquisition is that we already have a near all-star in Rondo and neither can really play well off the ball. <g> So together they don't have any synergy.

Tiny's a winner, Marbury is not. Tiny made his teams better. You love Marbury fine. Go get a bib. It's starting to dribble down your chin a little bit. Me, I say "no thanks" to Marbury. You don't have to like it. But spare me your concern about credibility. I mean what on earth would I do around here if YOU didn't believe in me. That might be enough to make me stop posting here completely if YOU didn't agree with everything I said. Thanks for clearing things up.

Marbury has made every team he's been on worse.

Marbury with the T-Wolves:

Best record? 45-39
Record in first season after his departure? 50-32

Marbury with the Nets (traded in the lockout-shortened '99 season):

Season Before? 43-39
First full year with Marbury? 31-51
Best year with Marbury? 31-51 (they went 26-56 the next year)
Record the year after Marbury left? 52-30

Marbury with the Suns:

Season before? 51-31
First year with Marbury? 36-46
Best year with Marbury? 44-53
Record the year after Marbury's departure? 62-20

Marbury with the Knicks:

Season before? 37-45
First full year with Marbury? 33-49
Best record with Marbury? 33-49
Record the year Marbury isn't playing? 24-32 (better winning percentage than 33-49)

That article is kind of frightening...

Same here. That's who were getting to help our team?? I mean for real...let's just call a spade a spade here. No reason to make excuses or propose what ifs on this one in the face of a mountain of evidence suggesting otherwise.

Bucknersrevenge,

Those are the most manipulated stats I have ever seen.  I am sure that the Suns improved record had NOTHING to do with signing Nash and other upgrades.  I am sure that bringing in D'Antoni and a lot of better players had NOTHING to do with the Knicks' improved record.  I am not sure of the Nets' moves, but am sure that those moves had a LOT to do with their improvement.  To imply that just getting rid of Stephon led to these improvements is asinine.

Actually, no it doesn't.  Because it doesn't say that he was replaced on the Nets and Suns by Jason Kidd and Steve Nash, two of the best point guards of this generation.  I have no doubt that Marbury never will, and never could've been the #1 player on a successful team, but luckily for the Celtics, that's not what they're asking him to be.

Yes, he's a cancer, yes, he's insane, but if he acts up, cut him. It's that simple. There's very little if any risk.

I wish Marbury was as good as Rodman.

no, it doesn't at all considering there he was the #1 player (or supposed to be) and was replaced both times by two of the finest PG's in the league, and here he will be a 6th or 7th man off the bench making the vet min, but lets not let facts get in the way of an asine comparision.

The truth is we don't know, hope for a stable marbury who knows that this is his audition to 29 other teams to get james posey + money who plays well, and hope we dont get crazy steph who we have to cut 2 weeks later and regain our giant hole at 6th man.

I dont know what will happen, and he is crazy and not anyone i would want long term, but using stats where he left an ok team as the star and was replaced by kidd and nash respectivly to prove he wont be a decent 6th man for 4 months? I don't see the realevance.
