I'm not diminishing the seriousness of drunk driving here, but just as big a problem (if not more) are perfectly sober people talking on their cell phones while driving.  I believe I read this is now the #1 cause of traffic accidents.

I'd tend to believe the percentage of serious accidents are higher for drunken drivers, but for sheer volume cell phone talkers are #1.  Do a little visual survey next time you're in your car.  It's absolutely insane how many people are chatting away.

It's the sole purpose for me getting drunk.

Not really, but I have done a few times. I'm quite coherent usually, so it probably comes across as the same old rubbish. :D

I totally agree Redz.  Definitely drunk driving is more dangerous, but it's the volume that makes cell phone driving such a danger.  So many people do it.  And while it doesn't impair your judgement and motor skills like drunk driving does, it does distract you.

Even worse is text driving.  This is absolutely asinine, but I've seen it plenty of times.  I was driving down a main road and in the car in front of me, I could see a girl's face in her rear view mirror.  She was looking down for about 3-4 seconds, and them would look up for a second.  Look back down again for a few seconds, and then look up, and so on.  I didn't want to be anywhere near this girl on the road, so once it got to two lanes, I went right past her.  Sure enough, as I went by there she was texting and hardly paying any attention to the road.

All states should make it against the law to talk on cell phones (and definitely text) while driving.  Hands-free phones make it better, but still just the simple act of having a conversation on the phone makes you less aware of your surroundings.

The former, especially since I don't know what you mean by the latter.

Haven't had a drink in over 20 years. Never was a drunk driver.

What baffles me though is the majority of the discussion about the consequences (not all) are more concerned with the effect this has on the driver, not the victims. I really don't care how embarrassing it is for them, or their experience in jail, etc. It's those 16k people killed (most recent numbers) and their family members that I am concerned about. 1800 of that number were young kids. Sadly the fatality is usually the other person and not the driver.

There is no question that it is tough to make smart decisions when drunk about whether or not to get behind the wheel. It is before hand that you consciously make the decision not to be bothered by coming up with the alternative to prevent that choice from needing to be made. Destroying other people's lives because you are lazy or don't want to be inconvenienced is a pretty pathetic choice to be made and if I had my way there would be a one strike rule. You ever get caught driving drunk you never have a license again. You drive afterwards anyway and you get serious jail time. I have no sympathy for this crime.

And I will add in drowsy driving as well.  I think it is great that drunk driving has gotten such a stigma over the last 20 years or so.  It really is incredibly dangerous for everyone involved, and needs to treated severely.  However, there are these other hazards, like driving while drowsy, as well as talking on cell phones (or even texting!) while driving, that can be almost as dangerous...but really have no stigma at all.

I don't know how many times I have heard people tell stories about falling asleep at the wheel, and laughing about it, not realizing that they put everyone on the road in danger.  There definitely has been a movement of late to bring this to light a little more, but there is still a long ways to go.
