I say waive him now.  Sign some other C for 10 day contracts that have more actual experience as placeholders.  If someone plays well enough (and PJ, Zo or Smith do not become available), then sign them for the rest of the season.

Players like
Othella Harrington
David Harrison
Earl Barron
or even
Pollard

None of them are anything to get excited about, but I think all would be an upgrade.

considering the 10-day contract is now an option, i agree. but i wonder whether you cut cassell first with the agreement he coaches, and could be resigned if needed going forward. keep POB, even if only for practice purposes, but at least as insurance if perk goes down again, etc....

If the Celtics are signing a backup C because POB isn't good enough, why would they keep POB?

Cassell can be a useful player.  He showed that during some of the playoff games.

I imagine we will see a lot more of Cassell after the all-star break and into the playoffs.

Right, he may be. So sign him again when they want him to play.

Meanwhile, thought we were talking about a 10-day to test a big guy. At least POB has been in the system all year and COULD play in a pinch if need be, which if Perk is injured and our 10-day fellow fails, is very possible.

If they had actually played him up to this point, then there would be no need for this.

But he looks like a true bust.

Maybe he could get it in a future season, but he isn't the answer for the Celtics now.

And honestly, I am more worried about Rondo getting hurt and not having an actual PG on the roster if Cassell is waived.

OK well either way the point is the same. Are any of these vets in shape? How's Harrison fairing overseas? He smokes too much weed.

Another possibility is Courtney Sims:

http://www.nba.com/dleague/playerfile/index.jsp?player=courtney_sims

He's leading the league in blocks, boards (by over 2 a game), efficiency and scoring 23 a game while shooting 60% from the floor and over 80% from the line. the guy has GOT to be better than Paddy.

Better than POB is not enough. I doubt there's a single big man in the D-League that is good enough to be part of the rotation of a contender.

We can replace POB's role as project big with one of those young guys, but the chances any of them can help the team are very slim.

But as a 10 day contract guy until one of the vets are ready to join the team, I think puts the Celtics in a better position.

Only a guy who's at least as good as Davis.

and Sims is from Roslindale!

  • You know my methods, Watson.
some of these ideas are nothing more than rearranging the deck chairs on the titanic...

IF we get a player, it needs to be a VETERAN...otherwise, he's just going to keep POB's seat warm.  this is not about change for the sake of change...it's about change for a player who will instantly help.

right now, that player is either PJ Brown or a bought-out Joe Smith...otherwise, the point is moot unless danny trades for a veteran big.

if the VETERAN joe smith is bought out he's going to be a Cav, so you gotta trade for the guy if you hope to get him.

POB was in D league last year and did not put up anything like Sim's numbers. Sims has been on fire lately an clearly has a better "motor" than POB. Great idea - tp for you!

thought this was interesting.  i got it from another thread, but it is appropriate here too, as it reaffirms what doc and nellie have both stated about POB's work ethic (or lack thereof) in practice.

Patrick O’Bryant’s name has come up a lot lately… and it hasn’t been good. The Celtics need a 7 footer to come off the bench, and he’s nowhere near ready to help. It’s frustrating for us. And it’s frustrating to Kevin Garnett too.

Word from practice is that KG took POB aside after practice and worked him over. It was an intense… emphasis on INTENSE… one-on-one session. Garnett did everything from explain how a first step taken in a certain way will work… to getting up in O’Bryant’s face to “explain” things. Afterwards, KG explained that he’s sick and his leg hurts… but he’s there… in practice… and making sure guys like POB get the lessons he got when he was a young baller.

I’m sure this will be a focus of some media reports tomorrow… because these guys did nothing to hide what was going on. It was so nuts, that the people who were watching, were watching in awe.

I understand if Patric O´Bryant is getting abscent-minded by the treatment from Doc.  Doc should really think about last season when he had the luxury of giving the bench players heavy minutes during the regular season.  It meant our overall team was probably the best conditioned team in the playoffs last year when it came to fatigue.  I havent checked out the facts but I am sure the big three had never played so few minutes during a regular season as last year (apart from the decrease in other stats).
I dont think getting KG in POB´s face like he went into BBD face earlier in the season.  You dont put confidence into somebody´s mind by pulling a "KG" on him.  Players get confidence by playing games, it is as simple as that.  Doc and Ainge KNEW that our team wasnt as deep as our last year´s team and they need to address it before KG goes mental.  KG needs to be given morphine or something before he eats some of his teammates!  It is positive to keep the guys on their toes but this is overdoing it.
