The Portland Trailblazers have announced the following trade:

Portland trades: #2 (23), #5 (8 ), #9 (8 )
Washington trades: #2 (2), #7 (29), #10 (2)

Trailblazers team president Roy Hobbs expressed satisfaction with the deal, and indicated that this is a deal he expects to work out well for both clubs.  Mr. Hobbs expressed a certain amount of trepidation about trading away some depth, but thought the value present at the top of the second round was too much to pass up.

It is expected that the two teams have exchanged cash considerations as well, as an expression of good will between the two front offices.

Reports out of Atlanta suggest the Hawks' front office is seriously contemplating moving down from their #12 slot in the first round.

"Well, we won't really know for sure until the picks ahead of us are made," said Hawks GM Lucky17, "but we doubt one of the guys we really want is going to be there. We've put out some feelers to gauge interest with other teams, but there's no real smoke. Yet."

While talk seems to center on sliding down a few slots, there has been discussion about the possibility of trading out of the first round entirely.

The Washington Wizards have confirmed the following trade:

Portland trades: #2 (23), #5 (8 ), #9 (8 )
Washington trades: #2 (2), #7 (29), #10 (2)


The Wizards are confirming that they have indeed agreed to the trade announced by the Trailblazers earlier today. Faced with the 28th pick in the draft, Wizard's GM KCatthestripe admitted that it was unlikely that he was going to be able to draft his ideal team and that key to building a great team from this position was remaining flexible in the early parts of the draft and taking what the draft may give him.

KCatthestripe then pointed to his coaching staff as the definition of adaptable, both Jordan and Wooden having proved that they can win with or without elite players, and Mr. Wizard's ability to make something out of nothing.

The Wizard's GM did admit that he was wary of accepting the counter offer of a GM as experienced as Portland's but felt the offer was legitimately beneficial for both teams. He would, however, like to apologize to the GM's in the Northwest Division for giving th Trail Blazers what might be the best 1/2 punch in the nation.

The thinking was that the difference between 31st and 52nd isn't that large. Without the ability to trade up and take one of the truly elite players in the league, I felt it was better to shore up as strong an overall starting five as well as picking up assets along the way.

But to each their own...

I don't think KC's trade was bad, at all.  That fifth rounder is going to turn out to be a starter.

Now, if you want to talk bad trades, does anybody remember this one from last season?  We had a player pick Carlos Boozer in the first round.  He then trades Boozer and a #3 for a second-rounder, so he can take Luol Deng.

That's right:  He traded a #1 and a #3 for a #2.  I think it's trades like those that led to us needing "trade approval" this year.

I completely agree. If you can't get a top flight talent it is better to move down and get a comparable talent while adding depth with later picks.
