stay away from ricky davis, ron artest and Marbury.

I have a feeling danny's trying for something large, meaning some kind of trade.

but if something big's not in the works then:

1.  sign eddie house
2.  sign tony allen......never play him at point (despite the temptation) and discipline him into turning the ball
over less....make him give the ball up and move without the ball....he'll score plenty in a movement offense
with high volume passing, and we know his defense.
3.  give giddens some minutes from the get go.  He may be ready to help substantially by the playoffs.

I agree. I feel like there's a trade coming. We have to get rid of scal somehow.

There is no one out there in free agency that offers the balance of offense and defense that Posey brought to the table.  It is a tough call right now on whom to pursue.

In terms of overall effectiveness, Ruben Patterson is the tailor made replacement.   The guy is a good offensive talent who plays great defense.  That said, he's certifiable and there is a reason he runs from team to team.

I tend to agree that Ricky Davis is probably the "best bargain" out there AND probably takes a two year deal at the MLE from Boston if offered.

I'm simply not a fan of Barnes's game. Would much rather see us pursue Maurice Evans if we are going down that route.  Wouldn't pay the money it would take to get him.

IMO, Kenyon Dooling is probably the best fit with regards to style of game, recent production, and makeup (though I have questions about that point).

I'm kind of overwhelmed with all of the possibilities out there.  Without getting too specific, I do think there are some rules Danny should follow when pursuing free agents.

1) If possible, go for quality over quantity.  Right now the C's have a starting lineup and probably a backup 4 (Davis or Powe).  In order for a free agent to be worth acquiring, they're going to have to beat out the likes of Giddens and O'Bryant.  Otherwise, all we have is a nice 10th or 11th man who will ultimately be pretty unimportant.  So if Danny sees someone on the market capable of unquestionably beating out everyone else out there to back up one of those spots, he needs to pay him.

2) Go high risk, but only at the minimum and with a backup plan in mind.  I don't mind guys like Marbury and Miles coming on board, but it should stay at the minimum so that if they start causing trouble, they can be cut without hesitation.  These guys wouldn't be terrible if they brought Allen and House back to compete with them.

3) Keep the deals short. I know the C's have the MLE next year as well; however, at some point Wyc is probably going to draw the line on the luxury tax.  Next year they'll be a new crop of free agents to hit up.  For this reason, I wouldn't mind them targeting older guys who are probably only looking for one year like Michael Finley or even bringing back our old friend Sam Cassell.

Bringing Cassell back is fine.  Finley, on the other hand, is toast.  Can shoot 3s and that's about it.  If he were an elite defender, the Spurs would bring him back.  He does not address the team's use for improved athleticism either.

I agree it's possible.  Giddens' scouting report makes him sound like a Posey clone: athletic, can hit the long ball, plays hard, has long arms.  Like Posey, the knock seems to be his ability to take it to the rim off the dribble.  That shouldn't be a huge deal because he won't be expected to.  Giddens is also a four year (sorta 5) college player; he's older than Rondo, Pruitt, Davis, and O'Bryant, so his learning curve might be smaller.

Walker given his injury and his youth might take a bit longer.

Still, I'd like them to have other options.  At the very least they should sign Tony Allen.  Though I'd prefer a guy like Barnes or Finley.  While Giddens or Walker could be the answer, I'd like to have somebody to fall back on if they're not.

Ray played with Ruben here in Seattle. Patterson was not a problem here, but whatever. Ray probably knows a lot more than anyone else.I never assume any of these rumors about guys are true. Dale Ellis was my golfing buddy for years and the press made him look bad. He was a great guy who had a terrible marriage. He was in a bad car wreck after drinking too much and they traded him when he came back and didn't play well at first. He almost never drank and if you read the newspapers at the time you'd have thought he was a drunk. So if Ray thinks Patterson is ok, we get him and surround him with great character guys.

But if Ruben is poison....

Sign Tony, please sign House, step one.

For the mle can we get an unselfish player who can play at the 4 when KG is at the 5? A guy who can hit jumpers and ft's? anyone who fits that description will work, while we get the kids playing time? That our best bet now.

Aside from Patterson's personality, the other thing that bothers me is his lack of range.  For all the talk of Posey's defense and toughness, his ability to hit the open three did a ton for this team as well.

If we're going to go with a 3 who can't hit the trey anyway, I'd rather role the dice on Darius Miles, who brings more to the table than Patterson plus an extra 4 inches.

No on Patterson. He isn't any where near as good as he used to be. I'd rather play Giddens/Walker. Lets find a better, reliable wing.... or at least roll the dice with a high upside guy for the minimum.
