It is pretty simple.  The Celtics will make a fair offer to both Posey and Maggette with the hope that one of them jumps at it AND they lock down the contract quickly.

Arenas, Davis and Brand opting out all have a huge affect on Maggette's ability to make money, since there's not that much out there. Going into free agency, ten teams could conceivably offer more the MLE based on cap space. The Clippers and Wizards seem to have spent their cap money on Davis and Brand and Jamison and Arenas, respectively. It's unlikely the Hawks ($7 million without Smith or Childress), Bulls ($10 million without Deng or Gordon), Sonics (over $10 million) or Bobcats ($7-8 million with Okafor's QO) will have any interest in Maggette. That leaves 4 teams: New Jersey, Memphis, Philly and Golden State.

The Nets should have around $7 million available. They might be interested in offering him a 2 year deal starting at $7 mil. This will let them have more cap space expiring in 2010, and gives them more flexibility to deal Carter. They won't offer anything beyond 2 years, though.

Grizzlies have $17 mil available, but will they care to invest it in Maggette? I think they hold onto it for next year.

Philly has at least $12 mil in cap space. They're pursuing Josh Smith, which would be interesting. If that doesn't work, they might just make an offer to Maggette. But would they offer Maggette money when they'll likely be locking Iguodala up long term at the same position?

Then comes the Warriors. They could definitely offer Maggette a lot more than the MLE, since Davis appears to be heading out of town. While they are stocked with wings, that's their style. They could make an offer, especially since their tens of millions under the cap with Davis opting out and probably leaving town.

No sign and trades, though if Davis goes to LA. LA has to renounce Maggette's right if it signs Baron. Then he's stuck either taking the MLE - in which case, we're in the same boat as everybody else - or hoping for Golden State, Memphis, New Jersey or Philly to offer him more than the MLE.
Go Celtics.

great if the celtics could sign maggette.

with him aboard, the celtics would have a consistent scorer off the bench, something they did not have this season. the bench scored at times, but maggette would provide consistent and strong scoring. the celtics bench would be deadly indeed.

this means that both ray allen and pierce would not be called upon to log  so many minutes during the season. both averaged 36 minutes a game. i would like for both of them to play closer to 30 minutes. given their age, fewer minutes could mean they would be more rested for the playoffs. and maybe even extend the celtics mini-dynasty by a year or two.

between the sg and sf position there are 96 minutes to divide up. if doc gives 60 to 66 to pierce and allen, maggette would still be able to come off the bench for 30 minutes.

maggette would play fewer minutes and score less for sure. but then, maybe he will look at allen, garnett, and pierce and think "i could score less if it means i take home a championship ring."

i think posey is a bigger priority, but having maggette, posey, powe, and house as your bench is pretty darned good.

I like his offensive game and rebounding but how is Maggette's D? Bold move none the less.

Thanks for bringing this up, Rebus -- I was thinking along the same lines.  So far as I understand it, Corey isn't often accused of guarding anybody.

It's largely for that reason -- and a host of others that have been mentioned on this board already -- that I think Posey is the more important fit for this team.

That said, like Redz, I'm a long-time fan of Maggette's and I stand with Big Ticket in his awe of Maggette's ability to get to the charity stripe.  Further, this team had a few players that weren't known as defensive stalwarts coming in that came out as much better defenders -- ya never know what a chance on a winner will do for someone's motivation and what playing with KG et al. will do for their defensive game in general.  In the unspeakable event that Pose does move on, I'd be very happy bringing in Maggette...

...and while I realize that it's going to be inordinately difficult financially, imagining a bench that includes both of these players next year is mind-bogglingly enjoyable.  A guy can dream, right?

I HAVE A QUESTION:  It seems illogical to me that we are thinking about signing both Posey and Maggette.  Not sure about the money and the cap either.  So my question is, are we simply making an offer to both, ready to rescind the second offer if one player takes the offer.  Can we do that?  If so, offering Maggette looks like we are creating leverage to pressure Posey into signing sooner rather than later.  Just thinking out loud.

Just finished reading everything and one point that I have not read was this:
I do not believe that Danny would have made an offer to Maggette's camp without some serious discussions first which leads to the prospect that he's at least interested in coming to Boston and therefore this is not a "pie in the sky" concept.

Would Danny or the Celts being doing this to drive Maggette's price up in case one of the other contenders is currently interested?  The theory being, better to stretch the other guy's cap space as well or perhaps price Maggette out of a particular team.

Would the Celts be looking at shortening the rotation to ensure minutes to make this happen?

And to think.........we weren't going to have anything to talk about this summer!!
I love my kids, call me a sap - it's true.

I think a lot of title contenders are thinking the same thing and Danny just wants to improve his odds of getting either.

Pretty meaningless.  Obviously Ray's numbers went down quite a bit as a result of sharing the load with KG amd PP.  Maggette's numbers would suffer also.  Not to mention that Maggette seems like a duplicaiton of PP.  They probably would not play as well together as Ray and PP.  Pluse Ray's shooting ability (and strecthing the defense) should not be underestimated.

I like Maggette and have always thought of him as a poor man's Pierce (though I admit I've only seen him play maybe a dozen times through the years).  He'll be 29 in November which makes him a perfect 'young veteran'.

I think there are a couple of rather compelling reasons for him to sign here -- especially if Posey opts to go elsewhere.  Playing time would start at about 25 minutes per game, but would certainly rise -- RA could be slowing down, injuries are a possibility, and Maggette may flat out earn minutes over Ray.  With Posey on board, I'd find it hard to imagine enough time for all 4 of these guys -- unless DA has a plan to move Ray.

Most importantly, note that the full court press hasn't even begun yet.  Is there a sales/ recruitment team in the NBA that could possibly be better than Ainge, Doc, KG and Pierce?  My goodness -- if the C's put on their four-pronged press to bring him to Boston, he'll be charmed, cajoled and prodded by the absolute best in the league (best charmers AND best team).

Stats aren't going to tell the entire story here in terms of Ray vs. Maggette.  Maggette was the #1 scoring option on his team, whereas Ray was third.  If you switch the two players last season, I'm sure Ray would have outscored Maggette.

And his scoring suffered. But Maggette is a legit scorer in the league. What I like most about him is his ability to get to the line. I thought we were going to do it more ourselves last season... something we could improve on, Maggette should help.

Yeah, I'm not a huge "numbers guy" myself, they say nothing of the intangibles. Literally just throwing them out there. The only thing I'll take away from those numbers is that they're both hitting from downtown at about the same clip.
