I'll be the first to admit it openly:  I'd rather have Maggette than Posey for the same money.

There, I said it.  Celticsblog blasphemy.

This is definitely an interesting argument.

I think Maggette is definitely the better player... but is he a better fit for the Celtics?

Personally I think Posey can make a bigger impact in his limited minutes than Maggette could in the same role.  Just something about Posey's toughness, "glue" factor, hustle, versatility, and big time 3 PT shot making in the clutch.  But the C's could certainly do a lot worse than Maggette if Posey chooses to move on.

The only way this makes sense for Boston if they have some crazy plan to trade Ray and play big. Why on earth would they sign a 2 guard of his ability as a backup to Ray/PP?

That was the first thing that popped into my head when I read this as well. Wonder if Danny is setting up for another franchise tweaker.

I personally think that Danny is playing mind games with Posey, so that he lowers his asking price.

If the Celtics show they're not desperate for him, he might consider asking for less than he is.

If he signs, leads to a whole new round of questions with big trades the Celtics could do.

Wow, guess they're testing out the "Wanna come play for a winner thing?"

Agreed.  I'll be beyond shocked if he accepts that offer.  This guy wants to get paid.  Even if he might take less money to play for winner, that's still not alot for a guy who can put up very good numbers.

In fact, I'm gonna say it right now.  He won't accept that offer haha.

I think if Danny moved Ray and didn't sign Posey, the team would have major issues with that.  I think Danny might contemplate Maggette as Ray's eventual replacement, but not this season.

Are any of the teams under the cap really going to offer Maggette a big contract?  Doubtful.  Which means, if he doesn't resign with the Clippers, a MLE deal with Boston might be the best offer he gets.  He can either suck it up and take a longterm deal, and he's young enough and good enough to make that worthwhile to Boston, or he takes a 1 year with a player option to go back on the FA market next year.

This is a smart move by Ainge.  I'm sure they'd rather have Posey with a 2 or 3 year deal, but Maggette's probably the best alternative is Pose walks for more money.

I seriously doubt Maggette would sign myself but I'm curious to what the terms of the deal offered was?

Multi-year deal?  A club friendly deal similar to what we gave Posey last year? (One year with player option for second year)?  Simple one year deal with the hopes he'd take it to build himself into a better free agent next off-season?

Seems to me that it's either that, or more likely

- 4 year non-bird Contract to Posey (500k less than a 3yr MLE deal)
- 4 year full MLE contract to Maggette

I can't see Ainge making offers to both guys and saying "whoever takes it first is our guy" then yanking the other's deal..... that would seem to be pretty damaging to his rep as a GM to other FAs and agents.

intriguing.

I'm not sure that Maggette is a good fit for this team, and i'd be pretty down on adding him then trading Ray Allen. Though it can't be put past Ainge to have seen what value deals like Ray Allen's that exprie at the same time as Wade/Lebron/et al. have.

That said how coudld you be down on adding a 20/5/3 guy?

This is a great move and signals to me Ainge realizes Poze is 31 year old bench player coming off a big play offs that doesnt deserve stater money and the full MLE is starter money.

Posey deserves 3.5 for 3 years max.

Maggette is worth full MLE for 5 years.

They can play him small at the 4 because hes so strong this would be a great lineup.

I agree, this is a very smart move by Ainge. Last year he got Posey at a bargain by playing the market, and he's doing it again this year by understanding that not many teams out there are going to offer big contracts to Maggette, so a one or two year deal to play for a ring could happen. There is no way that he trades Ray Allen this summer though, you don't mess with the core of a team that just won the title unless you get LBJ or Dwight Howard in return.

Huge surprise, but I see Maggette heading to Orlando, he can go there and start and be a part of a young up and coming team, whereas here he comes off the bench, but knows he has a great chance at a ring.

I like his offensive game and rebounding but how is Maggette's D? Bold move none the less.

Agreed Roy, but what about the possibility of dealing a package involving Ray along with signing Posey. How that would work?

I actually really like what hes doing i think that this could really prolong ray allens career if he does this. You would be able to have ray down to around 30 minutes a game then corey can have the extra 18 plus some for resting paul maybe another 5-10 there they could always find minutes for a guy this talented. He could even play the 4 very sparingly when Doc likes to play small ball. I love the move but dont see him signing to be honest unless he doesnt get much more elsewhere. He could be the one to help along with our rookies to not have trouble with the atlantas of the world

Plus, what type of replacement is Maggette even going to be?  By next season he'll be 29; certainly not old, but also not exactly the player who is going to be able to be part of the post Big Three era either.

I think this might be Ainge trying to send Posey and his agent a message that they're not going to sit around and just wait for James to make up his mind.  Could be a way to get Posey to sign more quickly.

Also put me amongst those who think that Posey is a better fit.  It was impressive enough that Doc got 3 20 point scorers to share the ball; getting four to do it will be tougher.  Plus, this team doesn't need more scoring, particularly with Rondo looking to assume a bigger role this year.
