Paul George is the new Theo Ratliff.
Theo Ratliff being the expiring contract we needed to match salaries to get Kevin Garnett. That is what Paul George will be to us in 12-18 months time. And the picks we got from Philly (as well as our own) are the young assets we needed to put around Theo Ratliff to get that superstar in KG.
But can't Paul George prevent Boston from trading him as an expiring contract next year by simply opting out next summer and declaring himself an unrestricted free agent ?
That would blow up this entire plan if it is, in fact, what Brad had in mind when he did this and took us out of title contention and wasted another season of Tatum's prime.
Paul George is going to be earning $60 million dollars. His market value is closer to $20mil a season so he would end up losing a ton of money. So he won't opt out.
But if he does ...
That is fine too because it will open up a ton of cap space for Boston and they will be pursue a star through FA. We will have Tatum & D White & Pritchard on the books. We will have a cap hold for Queta. Scheierman on a cheap deal. We might need to offload M Robinson and Hauser to free up more money (another $25mil or so) but that is doable. We are quite lean financially if PG13 does opt out so we can become a major player in FA if he does.
It is a win-win.
----------------
If Brad strikes out in the trade market over the next 2 years, then PG13 leaves as a free agent and BOS will have cap room in 2028.
Although cap room in 2028 looks tighter than I initially thought.
Boston will have paid Queta his new extension by then (next summer). If we agree an early deal with Pritchard (expires same time as PG13), that would add his new improved larger deal onto the books as well. Those extra contracts for Pritchard and Queta will probably be $20-25mil each so $40-50mil combined. Plus there is D White & Tatum ($100mil for those 2). That could be $140-150mil for those 4 players by themselves. The cap will have probably gone up to $195mil or so. But you still have Hugo, cap holds for empty roster spots, whatever extensions may have been given to J Walsh or Baylor. Still have to move M Robinson & Hauser. It is doable but tight. More difficult to have large cap space in 2028 than 2027.
So I see that as the fallback option if Brad strikes out in the trade market with PG13. The next best route to acquiring a star to go alongside Tatum.
