Yeah...  Any time an age 40(ish) athlete is shattering records, it makes sense to be a bit skeptical.  Lebron James, Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, Lance Armstrong (33, which is ancient for cycling), Tom Brady (sorry to name a New England sacred cow), etc.  Nobody ever mentions hockey, but I will throw Ovechkin into the mix, although his career curve doesn't seem as wildly outlandish as some others.  All were already in the top 5% (1%?) all time; I think that their longevity has probably been helped by pharmaceuticals.

There certainly seem to be more athletes playing into their late 30's or early 40's. Pharmaceuticals certainly could have something to do with it, but I will point out athletes seem to have a better idea of how to take care of their body, what to eat, how not to repave their mother's driveway, ect.

I think another factor is today's style of play which is allowing players to be effective into their later years as compared to years past.

I remember when Jamal Crawford was coming to the end of his career and he was saying there is no way he could be putting up 15-20ppg and having 50pt nights like he was in his old age if the league was still the same one as he came into in 2000 or 2001. No way he could still be as effective. Probably wouldn't even be able to be in the league at that age back then. Too tough. Too physical. Too hard.

So only 2 wins behind with 2 games in hand. It would be amazing if San Antonio could pass Phoenix in the standings without Wemby.

I've gotta say, I don't understand how some of these teams are as bad as they are. 

Remember the Pick 2 Draft we did on here years ago?  For those that don't, the basic premise was that CelticsBlog GMs would select a franchise and would start with their top two players, and then would do a league-wide re-draft of everybody else.

I've got to think that Durant + Booker would have been picked near the top.  How do they hover under .500?

It is shocking. I thought the Suns would be a top 4-5 team in the West. Awful season for them.

I was listening to an analyst who was saying the Suns have a 67% win record when they have their Big 3 in the lineup. Both this season individually and last season as well.

It seems like injuries have played a big role in their below par W-L record.

Their supporting cast hasn't done well either. Their PG position and C position have both struggled. None of their PGs can play defense. Just basic setup guards. Coach hated Nurkic. Dumped him for a 3rd stringer in Nick Richards who is an inferior player. Plumlee helps on D but not on O.

Their 2nd best player (D Booker), 3rd best player (B Beal), and 4th or 5th best player (G Allen) all play the same position. They should have cleaned that up. Put together a more balanced lineup.

Easy, they don?t play any defense. 

Yeah, but both Durant and Booker are capable.

@Who hinted at it, but their frontcourt play is just very subpar. Nurkic was limited, and while Nick Richards isn't terrible he's J.A.G (just a guy) IMO. There's a lot of games where the Suns simply get outhustled and outrebounded inside. Durant, Booker, etc. just aren't always going to make up for the lack of rebounding either. Beal has also been inconsistent and often unavailable too, which I know frustrates Phoenix fans because there are games he misses because of a "toe" or "finger" injury, like really dude? If Beal played like a consistent 3rd option I think they could be much better but he doesn't. I actually think Durant and Booker have been great this season and put in the effort. But Booker is a bit limited on defense.

Edit: Nvm I forgot CLE also played last night vs. Detroit. It is telling that NY is now about to be 0-4 against CLE + BOS this season, and 0-6 if you include the two OKC games. And some of these games have been over by halftime. A very high Tier 2 team, probably not Tier 1.

Worth noting too, in terms of 40/20, if NY loses this one they'd have to win their next 3 in a row to reach the mark, and Boston is their next opponent lol
