How much money has Darnold cost himself the past two weeks?

I guess the clock struck 12:00 midnight for Darnold.  Tough decisions for MIN now.  Do you go with a rookie QB coming of multiple knee surgeries?  Will Daronld settle for a "keep the seat warm" role?

I would think that Darnold would take another short, decent contract in MIN unless someone offers him something silly.

Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy underwent a second knee surgery this week as he continues working his way back from a torn meniscus. McCarthy, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Michigan, suffered his original injury in the preseason, but needed another procedure on his right knee to mitigate swelling that occurred after he ramped up his physical therapy work, per head coach Kevin O'Connell. McCarthy also received a biologic injection, according to ESPN.

I think he's gone.

I have nothing personal against Darnold, but it's bothered me all season that some people have acted like he's an elite QB. Guys who are proven busts don't suddenly become studs. Minnesota has a good O-line, a great receiver in Jefferson, and some other solid weapons in Addison, Hockenson, and Jacobs, so any halfway-decent QB would fare well.

Consequently, I loved seeing the Vikings crash and burn last night.

Yep. Sam Darnold chose a bad time to turn back into Sam Darnold.

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

The irony is, Vikings lost a total of 4 games this season.

Week 7 - Lions
Week 8 - Rams

Week 18 - Lions
Wild Card - Rams

That franchise is cursed. Even 2 years ago they went 13-4, had a home playoff game and lost to Danny Dimes and the Giants

I think Sam Darnold is gone. A proven bust. He benefitted from a good team and a weak schedule.

Let the JJ McCarthy era begin.

He's a serviceable QB. Borderline starter and not necessarily someone you want as your starter but someone who can float around the league for a decade or longer.  We've probably seen his ceiling but he's certainly not total garbage either.

If he was a "proven bust", he would've been out of the league in 3 years like Jamarcus Russell.

It might depend on your definition of bust. IMO, a No. 3 pick who was looked at as a hoped-for franchise QB and then had the career that Darnold had prior to this year is a bust. Maybe that doesn't fit your definition of bust, and that's fine, but I think his career has been highly disappointing for a No. 3 pick.

Busts to me are guys like JaMarcus Russell, Ryan Leaf, Johnny Manziel, etc.  Total flameouts in the league.

Then you have guys like Vinny Testaverde, Trent Dilfer, Alex Smith, etc.... Guys who didn't live up to the hype of top 5 pick QBs but still managed to carve out careers and hang on multiple team rosters as either starters or backups.  If a guy plays a decade in the league, that's not a bust in my book.  Might've not lived up to expectations and a disappointment to to some fans but still did alright for themselves.

FWIW, Darnold made the Pro Bowl this season.  35 TD/12 INT is a pretty solid stat line.

I get what you're saying, and it's a valid point.

As for Darnold this season, I think a lot of middling QBs could've had that stat line playing with the O-line and receivers the Vikings have. But I have to give credit to Darnold for capitalizing on his opportunity.

Guess there are different levels to being a bust. I?m sure the Jets view him as a bust considering they took him at 3 and thought they were getting a franchise QB. He had a great regular season, but I still view Darnold as a backup. As we saw yesterday, he doesn?t do well under pressure. If I?m the Vikings, I?d move forward with JJ McCarthy.
