The picture came across in a text message Thursday afternoon.

?Young fella has bounced back nicely?

Jayson Tatum, arms folded and smiling, was standing with Boston Celtics assistant coach Amile Jefferson at Chris Paul?s CP3 Elite Camp in Las Vegas. And while the focus of the event was the young high school and college players being put through their paces and showing their skills, the messaging scout figured the update on Tatum would be of interest to a Boston-based NBA writer.

The Celtic star went down with a ruptured eight Achilles? tendon late in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series loss to the Knicks. Tatum remained in New York and underwent surgery the next day at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

There has been no timetable released regarding his return to play, but, assuming continued progress and no setbacks, the possibility of him rejoining the Celts late in the regular season has not been ruled out. (On the other hand, the Indiana Pacers have stated that Tyrese Halliburton will miss the entire 2025-26 season after suffering a similar injury in Game 7 of the NBA Finals more than a month later.)

?He Was Moving Really Well,? a Scout Said About Jayson Tatum
The untrained eyes in Las Vegas this week offered optimism.

?He was moving really well,? said the scout in a phone conversation with Heavy Sports later that day. ?There might have been a slight limp or something, but the surprising thing to me is that he didn?t have a boot for any of it.

?I?m no doctor, but I?ve seen guys coming back from Achilles? tears, and he looked way ahead. I was kind of shocked to see how well he was moving. I have no idea for what any of this means for when he can come back. I?m sure him and the Celtics? medical people have their program set up, and they?ll make sure that he?s where he needs to be when he does get back. But he looks great right now. Of course, he didn?t do any running or even jogging, but he was in great shape and he had no trouble doing his part at the camp.?

Papa Tatum might be right about a Feb/March return? 🤔

The more I think about it, the more I don't think it's worth it to bring him back next year.

I agree, let him rest and recover and build strength all of next year. There is zero reason I would risk his career because he cannot sit still and recovers faster than normal.

Strategic move as the East is weak...you can make the NBA Finals being an 8-seed as demonstrated by the Heat two seasons ago. There's been a flurry of very low-seeded teams making it as far as Conference Finals recently anyway the past 2 years (Lakers-7, Pacers-6 and 4, Dallas-5, Heat-8).

But all that said, I'd rather they sit him out for the rest of the season. Him competing with this roster would be an atrocity especially if Brad already made transactions that moved Kristaps and Jrue and Horford with one foot out the door

Right:  even if he theoretically could come back, we're not winning with our rotation of bigs.  Tatum at PF solves a lot of problems, but doesn't make us a contender.

Celtics Summer League standout center Charles Bassey is not planning on playing overseas next season, sources told CelticsBlog. Multiple outlets previously reported that he was seriously considering signing with the Serbian club Partizan Belgrade, but he currently plans to play in the NBA next season.

Bassey would especially love to sign with the Celtics if the opportunity presented itself, sources said. How realistic that might be remains to be seen.

If we wanted to sign him, I assume that there would be a corresponding waiving of Jordan Walsh.

I take Bassey over Walsh or Tillman
C/PF-Horford, Baynes, Noel, Theis, Morris,
SF/SG- Tatum, Brown, Hayward, Smart, Semi, Clark
PG- Irving, Rozier, Larkin

I would hope we would move Tillman first. Gotta think we can just send cash to get rid of him and not a 2nd. If we are also able to sign Simmons, then waiving Walsh would probably make the most sense. That is, unless we can move Niang, which doesn't seem to be happening

Yeah, I just used Walsh because he's non-guaranteed.  If we're going to compensate for negative trade value, Tilman makes sense.

Dumbest quote of the day:

Quote from: Kendrick Perkins
Here's my thing. I would never take what the guys, Bill Russells, and what they had to go through for us to be able to perform at a high level or even be in the NBA, right? For the NBA to even exist. I'm not, I wasn't there.?

?But I will say everyone's had their own form of adversity. Back then, it was racism and death threats, right? But having to battle through the adversity of f***ing social media as a player elevates right up into there when you talk about mental toughness.?

?I get it. Like people?s lives were on the line, but like mental health is a real thing. And like we see so many guys logging off of social media, right? John Wall like talked about like how he wanted to commit suicide. Like it's a real thing.?

?So everybody's affected differently. I'm not trying to put the two together. All I'm saying is this day and age, a lot of these guys are dealing with their own form of adversity, right??

?And people could say, 'Oh, then just stay off of social media.' Know how f***ing hard it is to stay off of social media?"

For a black American man who was raised in the south -- who met Bill Russell -- to say this is just sad.  The adversity of racism and death threats is not similar to the adversity of social media.
