The team had until January 10th to waive him without it affecting their cap since he was non-guaranteed until then. Doing this now indicates they are likely signing a FA. Is that Bassey? Is it...Ben Simmons?

I think a waiver before Jan 10 still would leave us on the hook for a prorated portion of his salary.

It would, but waiving him before January 10 would still get the Celtics under the second apron.

But they presumably know they are not keeping him regardless, and giving him a chance to find somewhere else to land.  But Tatum hurt, Smart to the Lakers, and Davison gone: I am going to have a very sad 9 year-old when she hears about this, even thought she knew Davison probably wasn?t going to make the team this year.

Mmm ... I was happy for him at first but ... it doesn't look like a good situation for him.

They have VanVleet as the starting PG. They have Reed Sheppard and Aaron Holiday as backup PGs. There is going to be no opportunity for JD Davison there. 4th string. Never play. Year in the G-League, Again.

Athletic story on Tatum using Chattanooga's facilities to rehab while in town for Kemba Walker's wedding.  Good to hear he's being so diligent.  Maybe he will make it back by the end of the season. 

For Tatum, the stop was another step forward in a long rehabilitation process. For the Mocs, it provided an opportunity to see how one of the world?s best players approaches his time in the gym. After meeting Chattanooga athletes and taking pictures with them, Tatum spent the next hour and a half focusing intently on Achilles rehab and weightlifting. Vitters and teammate Parker Robison said Tatum seemed to be ?on a mission? from the moment he entered the gym.

?The crazy thing was that he showed up, said ?Hi,? took some pictures, and then got right to work,? Robison said. ?You could tell that he was really serious about this injury. Got right on a (training) table and his trainer (Sang) just got right to it, started rehabbing, doing some strengthening stuff for that torn Achilles.?

According to the players, Tatum got a massage, stretched, and performed band work before progressing to some upper-body lifts. Though Tatum?s movement was still severely limited by the injury, the players were amazed by the way he approached every facet of his workout. Even between sets, Robison marveled at how Tatum stayed locked in.

?He?s constantly focused,? Robison said. ?In between sets, he?s always focused, he?s never goofing around. It?s like his mind is set on what he?s doing.?

?He couldn?t do much,? Robison added. ?But what he was doing, the very limited stuff he was doing, he was taking it very seriously and very detailed. All the little small things that we sometimes overlook, he was really good (at them) and did them consistently.?

Not surprised by this but very happy to hear this narrative of his workout.  And this would be for most people a small vacation going to a friends wedding.

It?s anybody?s guess whether he?ll be ready before the end of the season. But I think it?s clear that if he can be back he will be back.  Kudos to Tatum for being a model of professional behavior for the college players.
