I was just reading up on this NIL money in college basketball. I got curious how much money these stars were making.

And wow, Bronny James is getting around $6mil this year. Now he is a crazy outlier. Second on the list Hansel Enmanuel at $1.4mil. Then Shaq's kid at $1mil. Zach Edey at $800k.

It seems that you make more money the more instagram, twitter, tik-tok followers you have. So being a celebrity's son is a major gain in getting that NIL money.

Shedeur Sanders (football) is at a valuation of $4.1m, and Olivia Dunne (gymnastics) $3.2m. But most of the top 20 are football players. Hansel Emanuel is actually No.15 overall.

Bryce James is at a $1.4m valuation. Does help to be a nepo baby  :police:

I'm pretty shocked Caitlin Clark didn't crack the top 20.
Saw somewhere that Clark was 5th among women

Looks like she's #30, about $90k (estimated) behind #19.

That's wild to me that she's that low.  You're talking about one of the greatest women's college basketball players of all time.

Those valuations are calculated from social media followings.  Caitlin Clark isn’t that big, by comparison, on social media.  But she’s got a series of State Farm commercials, so I’m sure she’s doing better than a lot of those ahead of her on the list.  She’s such a household name at this point she doesn’t need the social media boost.

It looks like there's a split.  The highest valuations come from giant social media followings, but there are some athletes with much smaller followings that are estimated to make a ton.  That's presumably based upon what they can actually do as athletes.

For instance, Arch Manning "only" has 296k followers, but is the 4th most highly valued athlete.

Epic fail by Mark Cuban…  :-X

Tommy Beer: Jalen Brunson goes on record to confirm he twice approached the Mavericks willing to sign a four-year, $55 million contract extension – but was rejected both times by Dallas. (via @allthesmokeprod)

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

How do the nil deals work? Are they year to year? I have to imagine if you were paying Bronny James to represent your company this year for example you wouldn’t want to pay that again next year and have probably stopped running any ads you had.

The NIL we’re talking about here is earning potential based on name recognition, largely.  If you have millions of social media followers and post something promotional, that’s probably 5 figures for a post.  Maybe you’d have a contract to make X posts, but it’s not a contract with a school.  The packages that some athletes get as part of being recruited are largely different — that’s normally X dollars per month or semester.  Many athletes will get both types of income — what they get per activity, and what they get over time.

They hit a home run getting Luka but haven't done very well building around him.

They've done a poor job for sure. We also have to wonder though, how much of this is on Luka? He's had teammates like Porzingis and Brunson who he could not win with but have each gone on to perform much better without him.

Um, the Mavs were in the conference finals. Neither Brunson or Porzingis has been there post Dallas (and Zinger wasn't on the WCF team).

And Dallas hasn’t been there post Brunson. Mav’s were 52-30 the year they made it to the WCF with Jalen. Then he left and the following season Dallas finished 38-44.

Brunson and Doncic both need the ball in their hands, a lot. They both dominate the ball. There is no doubt that DAL missed badly not signing Brunson, if they had the chance. But I suspect they would have had to trade him.

Yeah this is a very strange post. Mavs definitely massively benefited from Brunson for that run. Not sure what Mo is trying to say here…
