Seems to me the lakers plays better without James
they have a similar record, but James is still +5.5 in on off differential per 100.
I don't know how good LAL can be or if LeBron and Davis will hold up. But what I see is that LeBron and Davis, when healthy, are still two of the best players in the league. I think it is foolish to think they would be better without LeBron. They may or may not be a true contender with LeBron, but they are going nowhere without him. You don't need any advanced stats to know this. Just go old school and apply common sense.
Lebron is still a very good player, but he can’t completely put a team on his back like he could for an insanely long time. The lakers have two major flaws on their roster. They don’t have enough shooting and they have some of the leagues worst perimeter defense with Reaves and Russell. Dinwiddie does very little to help these areas and they made no changes. Worse their best perimeter defender Vanderbilt may very well be out for the season. They had a fluky run to the conference finals last year beating a team with a completely injured frontcourt and a team with awful chemistry. This caused some guys like Rui to get overpaid and for them to not address some real weaknesses. Christian wood and Vincent have also not really worked out.
They are also lacking in ball-handling and passing in addition to outside shooting. We'll see if Dinwiddie can fix that or if they will still be short-handed but it's been a problem all season long for them.
Also a lack of quality interior play aside from Anthony Davis. Starting Taureen Prince over Vanderbilt cost them a big man defender & rebounder in favour of a perimeter player. Their backup big men haven't worked out. Jaxson Hayes is dumb. They do not know what to do with Christian Wood.
They don't like the lineup balance when Wood is at PF or when he is at C. LeBron just wants a big man who will defend, rebound and dunk when he passes him the ball. He doesn't make use of Wood's extra offensive talent. So Wood just becomes a liability as an undersized center when they play him there. And they have been strangely uncommitted to trying to find a way to make Wood work at PF alongside AD with LeBron at SF preferring again Taureen Prince.
A team with a lot of issues.
