I think it's a good trade for the Knicks.  The issue is they don't have many outside shooters.  Their size and toughness may be even better but they have no shooters outside of Brunson.  It the long run this will hurt them.

OG is a much better shooter than RJ is.  So the trade actually helps from that end.  Quickley is a better shooter than both, so they do lose that.

I was high on Quickley and thought he was worth more than that.  Maybe RJ’s value is worse than I realize, though, and this is less “Toronto acquires RJ” and more “NY gets out from under RJ.”  That might make a little more sense from the Knicks’ perspective. 

Still think the Raptors did well here though.  Got a starter-level lead guard that they sorely needed for an expiring 3-and-D forward who, while good, has become somewhat overrated imo.

Is Quickley a point guard or a shooting guard?

Is he enough of a PG to be a starting PG or more of a combo guard off the bench like Jamal Crawford was?

That is a seriously scrappy team. Lot of athleticism. Lot of size. Physicality. Toughness. Lot of defense. Loads of rebounding. Okay shooting.


Edit: Ah, I forgot DiVincenzo is on the team and starting at SG. So Hart will stay on the bench. I like that team. Nice top 6 (well with M Robinson).

Edit: Their bench is pretty dodgy though.

I'd say 4 of those 5 bench players are in the bottom third of bench players at their respective positions. The one that isn't is Josh Hart. He is a bit out of position at SF which lowers his value. So I have him in the middle third rather than top third at SF.

Hartenstein's return to the bench next year when M Robinson returns will help ease things. So too will signing a proper backup PF. Good test run for Grimes and McBride in the backcourt to see if they can be long term fixtures or need to be replaced.

However, for this season it is well and truly dodgy. One of the weaker benches in the league. They are a 6 man team.

So if Quickley is the starting PG, the Raps will look like:

G: Quickley, Schroder
G: RJ Barrett, G Trent Jr
F: S Barnes, J McDaniels (the bad one)
F: P Siakam, O Porter / Boucher
C: Poeltl, (nobody)

They also have Gradey Dick and Thad Young. I imagine either Young or Siakam will play the backup center minutes. Maybe Otto Porter.

At least Quickley will allow them to stop playing Malachi Flynn who has been a major drag on their team for the last few years at backup PG.

Significant downgrade from OG Anunoby to RJ Barrett. Particularly for their outside shooting. Even less shooting at 2-5 now. RJ another one-on-one guy to clog the offense like Siakam and S Barnes. Anunoby more of an off ball guy who allowed others more room to operate. So that will hurt.

Quickley is a nice addition. Quickley will probably be more useful than RJ Barrett whether Quickley starts or is a 6th man. Quickley & Schroder can give them a nice 1-2 punch at PG which they have not had since Lowry left. They haven't had two capable lead guards since then. They will be a nice combination alongside one another as well as Lowry & VanVleet were. I like that guard combination better than Quickley and RJ.

Then you can use two of S Barnes, Siakam, RJ Barrett at forward alongside them.

Bad news for Gary Trent Jr though. His playin time will likely take a hit with Quickley and RJ coming in. Too bad. I like Trent. Good shooter / scorer. He could help someone. I'd like to see him leave Toronto. They do not value him there.

While OG to RJ is a downgrade, the addition of Quickley should make it a net positive for TOR overall. That looks a pretty solid team to me. That should play .500 ball.

As someone who doesn't watch that much of the Knicks or Raptors, why is OG the first to go for the Raptors?   
If the Raptors want to reset / semi rebuild, why not keep OG?  just didn't want to pay him?
I can see getting rid of Siakam for sure, he is older and has a bigger salary.

Great question. I think they plan to keep Siakim.

I sat behind the Raptors bench last night. That team talked/interacted with each other the least of any team I've seen. Their offense was hopeless without a shot creator/shooter at guard.

I predict the Quickly does well for them and they become a tough bottom seed playoff team.
