Jordan Chiles becoming the center of controversy where she's stripped of her bronze medal, and in place, Ana Barbosu of Romania winning 3rd place.

Media and folks calling her disgusting things and getting racial with it. She had to step off of social media.

Here comes BronzeGate. The judges have never been fair and has always been controversial.

The racism is wrong, obviously, but it sounds like this is the correct result.  The appeal was too late.  Also, didn't the judges say the Romanian gymnast stepped out when she didn't?

Probably. But if it were up to me I'd just give both Romanians the bronze and let Chiles keep her bronze and move along. It should be the judge's problem for missing it in the first place

Too late by 4 seconds. I get that that's the rule, but the judges did screw up and that window to appeal crazy short. It seems crazy to remove the medal for that, I agree with Sparz that giving an extra bronze to would have been the better outcome.

But rules are rules, I guess. I hate the tight timeline though because it encourages just appealing all the time instead of taking the time (within reason) to check for a mistake first.

Sounds like a case where giving a bit more time to appeal (or just having more error checking in the objective parts of the scoring like difficulty and stepping out) could have avoided the whole situation.
I'm bitter.

Jennifer Valente in the Women's Omnium may have just saved the USA Gold medal count. The US was down 1 Gold coming into the day. It was thought the Women would get Golds in Basketball and Volleyball to take the lead.

Instead, the US only ended up with the Silver in Volleyball and Blades also lost her Wrestling Final to keep Gold medals for the US at 38. On top of that, China actually won an additional Gold in Weightlifting pushing them to 40.

I had completely forgotten about the Cycling event and Valente just finished with a convincing Gold. The count is now 40-39 heading into the last event: Women's Basketball. Should the US win (and they should), that would make it 40-40 - with an enormous lead in total medals (currently 125-91).

If only Shelby McEwen, the US High Jumper, had only accepted double Gold last night in his event rather than opting for a jump-off (and losing), it would officially be a win. But being down two Golds this morning and coming back to tie is still nice...if you care about that sort of thing.

Wow - what a win for the Team USA Women's Basketball team. Unbelievable shots by Gabby Williams at the end, but Team USA hit all of their FTs to close it out. Great job coming back from 10 down in the 3rd. That clinches the tie in Golds with China at 40

Congratulations Americans for winning the medal table at the final day. Another way to look at the table is by comparing the number of gold medals to population. The Netherlands finished 6th, before mighty countries like Great Britain, Germany, Italy and Spain and I'm also proud of that.

1. USA 40 (333M)
2. China 40 (1.4B)
3. Japan 20 (125M)
4. Australia 18 (26M)
5. France 16 (67M)
6. Netherlands 15 (17M)
7. Great Britain 14 (64M)
8. South Korea 13 (51M)
9. Italy 12 (58M)
10.Germany 12 (83M)
11.New Zealand 10 (5M)
12.Canada 9 (38M)
13.Uzbekistan 8 (35M)
14.Hungary 6 (9M)
15.Spain 5 (47M)
16.Sweden 4 (10M)
17.Kenya 4 (54M)
18.Norway 4 (5M)

USA and China tied for most gold medals.

But some people are saying if China counted Taiwan and Hong Kong gold medals, they'd surpass USA. Technically, they own both territories.

But if Russia also wasn't banned, then China wouldn't have won a lot of medals (or gold for that matter).

Shouldn?t China and USA get the most medals? In terms of population, resources, value placed on sports/Olympics wouldn?t it be surprising if they weren?t on top?

I?m glad for the individual medalists, it?s a great accomplishment for them after so much effort, but I really don?t get warm patriotic sensations just because we lead the medal count.  What I like about the Olympics is that athletes throughout the world who all work like crazy to be the best they can be get to compete with their counterparts who live in disparate places, experience unique cultures, speak different languages - but compete in in events common to our cultures in pursuit of the same goal - to be the best in the moment, and for some, display historic greatness.

Does a country really win the Olympics? Is that even a thing?  For me it isn?t. Congrats to all the medalists and to those who competed.

The Jordan Chiles bronze medal saga in the floor exercise may not be over yet. Originally she came in 5th but moved up to the bronze after an appeal. That led to an appeal by Romania which reversed the original appeal. The given reason for the orginal appeal being overturned is because the appeal was filed too late (1 minute and 4 seconds after the score was posted--it needed to be filed within a minute). USA gymnastics is not appealing the ruling and apparently submitted time-stamped video evidence that the original appeal was filed in under a minute. Weird stuff and I feel bad for all the athletes affected.

The one screwed over the most is Sabrina Maneca-Voinea.  If the judges scored the routines correctly, she would have finished 3rd, Chiles 4th, and Ana Barbosu 5th.  Instead, we've seen Chiles and Barbosa be given the bronze, but not the true third place winner.

Hence why Olympics should just award them three bronze medals and move on. Now they got a controversy on their plate that will ride onto it for many years and history. The Olympic athletes will greatly be impacted the most.
