A tweet from Lyles after he won the gold...

"I have Asthma, allergies, dyslexia, ADD, anxiety, and Depression, Lyles shared. "But I will tell you that what you have does not define what you can become. Why Not You!"

I love that he?s overcome challenges. No denying it was done with obsessive hard work and impressive commitment. The ?anyone can do it? line is something that bugs me a bit.  Obviously, people can, with effort, manage or overcome the impact of a disabling condition, but you don?t become the fastest man in the world without elite genetics.  Thats kind of a factor too.

You got that right.

The Netherlands are Olympic Champions in basketballl in the 3x3 tournament!!! First Olympic basketball medal for the Netherlands. Worthy de Jong, Dimeo van der Horst, Jan Driessen and Arvin Slagter making history. Amazing decisive shot by De Jong.

I was only able to catch their group win over France, but Team NL did very well in that match, even if watching three-on-three in the Olympics still feels pretty weird to me.

Was watching speed climbing as I was getting ready for work this morning. That sport is wild. Everyone looking like spider man racing up those walls.

Not sure if anyone else has posted about this but I really enjoyed the little I watched of the Olympic 3v3. For the next Olympics I will be curious to see if they can figure out a way to send NBA players into the 3v3. It would be interesting to see 4 NBA wings put in the time to compete in the 3v3. Watching the games I couldn't help but think 4 6'5+ NBA wings could adapt to dominate in what would be a really entertaining gold medal run. Ideally the target players would be 6'5+ wing shooters with at least two out of the four being high level P&R ball handlers.

Hocker kicked hard and snuck in between the two favorites to win 1500m Gold!

3 Americans finish in the top 5 and all are young. The US men haven?t had a group like this in a long time. Nuguse almost stole the Silver medal from Kerr, who was surprised when Hocker passed him just before the line.

Gabby Thomas from Northampton MA (she's from GA by birth but lives in MA and so we have adopted her) won gold in the 200 in an outstanding race! Beating her silver effort from Tokyo when she came second to Elaine Thompson Herah of Jamaica. Well done Gabby!

Looking forward to seeing the womens' 400m hurdles - Sydney McLaughlin vs Femke Bol will be a cracker.

That was the best final kick to win a race that I can recall. He was inn4th place with maybe 20 yards to go. I have not watched much of these Olympics but that might have been the best performance by an individual.

Not only was he behind, he looked like he was struggling and somehow, gained speed in that last 70m to take the top spot. That was unbelievable. Pure determination to win.

Go watch yesterday's 1500m race, it was great.

The women's Cycling Road Race had an awesome finish too in my opinion, loved the strategy behind it and particularly with the competition she was going against and for someone considered inexperienced in that race on top of it. Go watch the end, starting at the 4:10:00 mark or so, and get the context that goes with it:

Track has been absolutely phenomenal to watch these Olympics.  So many of the races have had ridiculous drama & finishes.

Getting really excited for the marathons this weekend.  The course is going to be an incredible grind.  The elevation profile is wild. Even crazier than Boston.

Tough break for Noah...he tested positive for Covid two days ago.  He didn't use it as an excuse and said that he was proud to win the bronze.  He didn't look right after the race.

Quote
PARIS ? Ariana Ramsey won an Olympic bronze medal with the U.S. women?s rugby team here last week. A few days later, something almost as exciting happened: She got a pap smear. For free.

?Like, what?? she said in a post on TikTok describing her new discovery: The Olympic Village offers free healthcare.

The United States, of course, does not. So in the days following her victory, Ramsey made appointments with the Village gynecologist, dentist and ophthalmologist. According to the Paris 2024 organizing committee, the Village also offers cardiology, orthopedics, physiotherapy, psychology, podiatry and, of course, sports medicine?all at no cost to the athletes. (Paralympic athletes will also have access to dermatology.)

Ramsey came to Paris as a rugby player. She is leaving as a healthcare influencer. More than 135,000 people have watched her initial TikTok, and another of the half-dozen follow-up videos she has made has pulled in more than 570 views. That is fine with her. The more she thinks about it, the more frustrated she is that she?s so astonished by the concept.

?That?s just America and their privatized healthcare system,? she laments in an interview, adding, ?I?ll fight for universal healthcare.?

The idea has gone viral in France: American discovers healthcare. ?A lot of people are kind of making a joke about it,? she says. ?Like, welcome to France.?

In fact, the Olympic Village has offered athletes and their delegations free healthcare since?ironically?the 1932 Los Angeles Games. But not many athletes know the option exists. The polyclinic is designed to handle as many as 700 patient visits per day, but Ramsey says many of the staffers there have thanked her for her videos, because she is bringing awareness to the option. She says she has gotten DMs from other athletes expressing surprise, and a few people have recognized her in person and said that her videos encouraged them to visit the clinic.

I didn't realise the bolded was true, but this is quite the story, especially for a lot of the 'underfunded' athletes.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Maybe I?m just out of touch with what the cool kids are doing today, but who the heck greenlit breakdancing as an Olympic event? It honestly just seems pretty awkward
