Mac may not play again in NE. I mean he was benched at the 2 minute warning with the ball and down 4.  If that doesn't say lack of trust, I don't know what will.

Two things can be true:

1) Mac hasn't earned any trust. He hasn't played like an NFL QB.
2) Bill and his coaches haven't helped Mac. They have hurt his development.

The best path forward is a split. It made sense to see if Zappe could orchestrate a win at the end. I think the European continent knew Mac wasn't going to do so.
The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.

FOXBOROUGH – Bill Belichick might be playing mind games, but on Wednesday, it appeared as though the Patriots were sticking with Mac Jones as their starting quarterback.

This day marked the only Patriots practice of their bye week. On paper, it’s a perfect opportunity to usher in a new quarterback whether that be Bailey Zappe or Will Grier. After all, if the Patriots are going to make a change, players need to get acclimated to the new starting quarterback.

On Wednesday, however, it appeared to be business as usual on the Gillette Stadium practice fields.

The team’s practice started with a drill where the quarterback worked fast to get downfield. Wednesday’s practice started with Mac Jones taking the first reps and practicing with starting center David Andrews among others. After multiple reps, Bailey Zappe took over but wasn’t with the team’s starting center or projected starting offensive line. The third rep went to Will Grier, who was working with third-string center James Ferentz.

After this drill, quarterbacks had position drills where they threw to receivers. Once again, Jones took the first reps, throwing to the team’s projected starting receivers. Zappe and Grier once again rotated after Jones.

Whatever mind games he's playing by creating uncertainty is only hurting his own team, not the opposition.

Like I said earlier,  Bill benched Mac to throw him under the bus and direct attention away from his own multitude of failures.

He's a selfish, vain man. He could have done a proper rebuild, but he wanted to do things the fast way so he could keep up with Tom.

So we get a thin, untalented roster with no decent high picks, and, unsurprisingly, most of the young guys struggle mightily. He's hamstrung this franchise and needs to go.

I love Bill Burr's take here on NE fans.

I love Bill Burr's take here on NE fans.

Butler made an excellent play reading Russell Wilson in that Superbowl. Pete Carroll also with a questionable playcall deciding to pass instead of running the ball with Marshawn (whether he completes it for a TD or not I leave that up to the fans; but my bet is he don't get the rushing TD even with all 4 downs).

BB lost the Superbowl 52 by benching Butler. If Butler plays, Patriots win that SB behind Tom Brady's 505 yards. I'll also blame BB for losing the second Giants Superbowl by not giving the team an average defense. Eventually lost to a Mario Manningham sideline catch at the end.

Mac's lost his confidence and lost the locker room. He should just demand for a trade. I look forward to hearing him bask and throw Belichick under the bus when he's on a new team. Well-deserved criticism of that washed-up grumpy sob on the sideline.

Out with the old, in with the new. Maybe Will Grier will compete for QB1 with Bailey Zappe.

I only want to start Grier or Zappe if they look worse than Mac at this point. I don't believe either will be the long term answer, and the Pats could be in position to address that.

Can’t believe how many people here blame bill and want him to give him zero credit and all the blame for everything. He is having a bad end to his career and certainly appears he has lost his fastball. But as others have said, it seems like maybe younger fans don’t realize this right now is how it ALWAYS is for some other teams.

There's a whole subset of fans that grew up spoiled and entitled because they didn't know anything else when it came to the Patriots.   The reality of the present is tough for some of them to swallow.  If you think about it, any kid born in the early 90s or later has only really experienced the dynasty era Pats in their fanhood.  That's wild.

The Patriots had an absolutely ridiculous run.  This the first time a lot of fans are experiencing the dark days.  You're right, this is how it is all the time for fans of some other fan bases.

They'll bounce back.  It's just a matter of how & when.

Who is giving BB no credit? I think most fans acknowledge he is a defensive genius and was a good pairing with Brady.

With that being said, I do remember the days before Brady. I remember BB's offense too. It was godawful. Looked a lot like now, actually. It was worse than Pete Carroll's. I remember Bill was well on his way to getting fired here before he found Brady.

And yet his coaching staff believes they can "turn a high school QB into an all-pro." That is the height of hubris, and that's where the disconnect comes in between Bill's supporters and his detractors.

I don't trust him to rebuild this offense. It's been in the toilet for half a decade now and is getting worse. We don't need any more Sanu's or JuJu's on this roster. I'd be fine with him staying on as coach if he would relinquish power to a GM who can better evaluate offensive talent. But he won't. And I don't think he has enough time left to do a proper reset. He'll be 75+ before this club has any hope of contending again. We need someone younger at GM to take this team forward.

Agreed. I’d be OK with Bill staying if he gives up his GM role. If not, could go with Mayo as DC, McDaniels as OC and O’Brien for HC.

Dang. It was an exciting finish but the Pats ultimately lose to the Bye Week 21-17

When I stop by to read this thread, I see mostly frustration. There's a populist appeal to firing the grumpy old man, but that's where the thinking ends. What would the above scenario accomplish (besides satisfying those that want to see Bill fired)?

The current team is not good enough to win with any of the coaches. People are pretending like the Patriots should be good again after a 20 year run of dominance.

Patience people- this might take a little while. In the meantime, look at what the rest of the league has been doing since 2000.

Compared to the Patriots, its not pretty.

Pats looked decent Mac’s first season with McDaniels. Since then it’s been a dumpster fire. This has been going on for years now and it’s only getting worse. Brady ain’t walking through that door. Time for a fresh start.

That was good - plus gives them (Giants) confidence going into next week.  Would’ve liked the Cardinals to have won today. Close. Bears also close.
