Interesting! I had struggled with where to rank him. He was great in the late 70s for Portland.

Is the intention to go small with Marion at the 4 and Lucas at the 5? Or big, with Marion at the 3 and Lucas at the 4?

I was very torn between DJ and another center I really like, but I went with DJ for the Celtics swag. Admittedly wasn't very smart to not pick some big man, but ah well. The DJ/Moncrief duo will be electric on defense, while also being two really good offensive player that will benefit by playing next to Mullin. Very happy with my team so far.

Nevermind. My mistake. I thought it was Mo Lucas. The article I quoted said Mo Lucas then I started wondering when was he on that team. He wasn't on that team. It was a different player. Error.


I've never found out the problem between Mo Lucas and Magic Johnson but Magic forced him off the team in LAL. I have never been able to find out the reason why. Magic hated playing with him.


I loved Mo Lucas in Portland next to Bill Walton. He was a fantastic PF.

Gave some good years in Phoenix as well in between some journeyman type years elsewhere. NY? Seattle at the end. LA in 1986 the year they did not make out of the West. The only time between 1982-1990 that LAL did not make out of the West.

He was fantastic with Walton. The power game of Lucas and the finesse game of Walton. I have always loved that combination. You got a finesse center, you want a power PF. You got a finesse PF, you want a power center. You need the balance to make it work. Mo Lucas was a force out there. A good defender. A strong rebounder. A good scorer. Did not pass much.

Was that Magic's problem with him? Too shot happy? I have no idea. Not even sure it was about basketball. Maybe it was a personality clash or an off court issue. Or maybe it was basketball. Magic made sure everyone knew he didn't want Mo Lucas on the team in 1987 anyway and sure enough Mo Lucas was off the team.

I had a strange thought with Iggy and Grant Hill prior to the draft. With so many scorers on each team, Grant will likely not have the ball as much as he did in DET in his prime. Probably something more similar to an All-Star game or Team USA performance from Grant. So maybe 12-14ppg 4apg 5rpg 2spg. How different would Iggy's production be from Grant Hill?

That was the question that was bugging me about Grant. This is not unique to Grant. I had questions like this for many players including Zo, B King and KJ on my own team. This is just the Grant Hill one.

So if Grant doesn't have the ball as much and isn't a 20ppg 7apg and is more of a 12-14ppg 4apg guy, what would Iggy be doing? 8-11ppg 4-5rpg 3-4apg 2spg? How much difference is there between them? Is Iggy a sneaky value pick later in the draft? Or is Grant a lower value pick at the top of the draft?

These were the questions I had on my mind entering the draft with Grant and Iggy.

I saw them as somewhat similar because both players are sketchy jump shooters. Both players are positive defenders with Iggy being the better defender. Both players are good rebounders with Grant being the better rebounder. Both players are very good ball-handlers and passers. The main advantage in Grant is his creation (shot creation but also playmaking) but if he doesn't have the ball as much as he did in DET, how much value does that advantage in creation bring?

Then again, maybe whatever team drafted Grant builds the team in such a way that he has the ball in his hands to be an 18-20ppg 5-7apg guy. But on most star-studded teams, I feel he is less than that and more similar to what he has done in All-Star games and Team USA (1996 Dream Team III).

The third round will conclude with the Washington Generals selecting a player that some would say is the most highly decorated defensive player in San Antonio Spurs history:

In case you're having a rough one, we're talking;

• 6x Defensive Player of the year
• 3xSteals Champion (dude averaged 2.7 steals over his 11 year career)
• 4x NBA All Star
• the only guard to ever record a quadruple double

...all while averaging 14/5/5 from the 2 guard spot in an era where real shooting guards weren't exactly putting up gaudy assist numbers. And, unlike a lot of his contemporaries, he definitely showed he could stretch his shot to the three-point line later in his career. Such a bad dude on the defensive end that his nickname on Basketball Reference is just 'Dog'...(and it bears noting that he appears to be, by all accounts, a pretty unpleasant person, to put it lightly. Ultimately, while I would not buy his jersey in real life, I'm coming down on the side of 'this is about as far from real life as we get', and the fit on the court with Sheed and Tim is really promising.)

At Shooting Guard, Alvin Robertson.

Ah man, I had Alvin at top of my list for round 4.  Thought he'd have been perfect for my team.  Really good pick.

Alvin Robertson is a great pick. As good as any defensive guard. Nice choice

I loved Alvin Robertson. He was incredible in San Antonio.

I remember I was dying for him to go to a team where he could win. He was so good then. He was pure destruction out there. Ruined other team's guards. A "creative destroyer". A guy who creates for his team by destroying his opponent.

Spurs sucked back then. It was such a waste that such a talented player wasn't in a position to win. They still made him a starter in the All-Star game and All-NBA despite it. A defensive guard on a 35 win team. Incredible accomplishment. That is how devastating he was in San Antonio.

I did not realize Rick Barry was fired from his broadcasting job for his inability to get along with his co-workers. That is hilarious.

I knew he had issues as a player especially in the earlier & middle stages of his career, but as a broadcaster? Haha, that is fantastic.

He made some pretty racist remarks on air with Bill Russell back in the early 80s. Obviously, Russell was not amused.

I really like the Alvin Robertson pick. He was the defensive menace. I know the that steals are only a part of defense, but arguably being the best at it ever is very beneficial.

There are quite a few HoF centers still left on the board. I have four that I would rank at least in the fourth round.
