Shams Charania: Free agent point guard Dalano Banton has agreed to a two-year contract with the Boston Celtics, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadum . Agent Aaron Turner of @VerusTeam negotiated the deal.  – via Twitter ShamsCharania

I like Banton. He needs reps but he's a tall point. Can't shoot...

Me too. Give him time in Maine and see what he can do.

What do you guys like about him, other than being tall?

He wasn't a good draft prospect, and he's inefficient and unproductive.  He's only earned about 10 mpg in Toronto, a team that needed guard play.

Toronto fans liked him, or rather felt Toronto didn't try to develop him, not sure Joe will be any better at that.

Also the last three guys Brad has signed are now former Raptor's.

He wasn't a good draft prospect, and he's inefficient and unproductive.  He's only earned about 10 mpg in Toronto, a team that needed guard play.

He was a mid-2nd rounder, which isn’t a terrible draft prospect, seeing as he was, you know, drafted.  There are a number of profiles of him in college — here’s the first one I clicked on:

Quote
Western Kentucky transfer Dalano Banton is a 6'9/204 point forward who fills the stat sheet. The Toronto native does a lot of his work running the pick-and-roll and he's a pretty good threat to finish, draw a foul, or find an open man when he drives—he's accounted for almost half of the team's assist total and has generally kept his turnovers down. Banton is also the team's leading defensive rebounder and shot-blocker while usually adding a steal or two. He's a solid all-around player.

There are also somewhat promising reviews of Banton in Toronto in his limited time.  Raptors fans were surprised he went to unrestricted free agency at all, given that he was one of just a few players who showed up to the press conference for their new coach, which is an odd privilege to be afforded for a player you weren’t keeping.

Many second rounders who make it (and I get many never do) do so for their second or third team.  It might in fact be better to get a second-rounder after he’s been in the league for two years than getting the pick to begin with — you miss the home runs of getting the guy cheap who’s instantly playable with future growth, but you might get more guys who’s can fill out an NBA rotation.  Is Banton one of those guys?  No clue.  Do you need to find a couple of those in the new CBA with 4 players making at least $22.5 million?  It sure is helpful.  Should this be the end of Justin Champagnie’s time in Boston?  Certainly yes.

Did you miss the word "good" in my sentence?  Being drafted doesn't make you a good draft prospect.

Sign vets not scrubs.

Guy’s a 2-way prospect. These slots by design can’t be used for vets. Celtics free agency is limited to veteran minimum signings and while there were plenty of players signing on discount, it was usually in sunny, lower-taxed states (Florida, Arizona, California, too, right). And while it is frustrating, this particular signing shouldn’t be, at least not because it is not a veteran.

So our team now looks like:

White / Pritchard / Davison
Brown / Brogdon / Banton
Tatum / Hauser / Walsh
Horford / Brissett
Porzingis / Williams 3 / Kornet

Ideally would like another forward type, or a versatile 4th big (JaMychal Green type), but I don’t hate it.

Banton can pass and is a pretty aggressive long defender. Nearly 2 steals and 2 blocks per 36 is an intriguing rate for a perimeter guy. Needs to hit the gym with Walsh and get shooting though, otherwise he won’t offer too much.
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

I like his size and ability to pass, block, rebound and steal, especially for a guard. His shot needs improving, this does not stop them doing anything, he at best the 13th guy on the roster. Not a bad move with plenty of upside if his shot comes good.

With better scorers around him and more experience, plenty of reason to believe his shot efficiency will improve greatly.

Certainly the 2 guys Brad has signed are defend first grinders. Would like at least one addition that can actually shoot and score.

I like Terrance Davis. Just someone that can score. Maybe Hauser is that guy finally.

Davis is barely above league average in shooting, but he could be good. I believe in Hauser though. Just need Joe to believe too
