I’d imagine he was safe, until the trade that included Brogdon fell through..

Marcus Smart was told he was safe week before trade

gary washburn: Talked with Marcus Smart today in Stoughton: 1) He was told week before the trade he was safe 2) Found out through his agent, not team. 3) Said he’ll always love Boston & #Celtics organization 4) Adamant that he & Jaylen Brown have no issues. Talked with JB shortly after trade – via Twitter GwashburnGlobe

“I went to the gym next day to get my stuff, talked to Brad (Stevens) and Joe (Mazzulla),” Smart said. “It was definitely shocking to find out that way, especially because the week before, I was already told we were good, there were no trade talks with me and we were good. I understand the business side of it, I’ve always been like that. I’m the first one to tell anyone, you can’t mix personal with business, it just doesn’t mix. I understand it’s a business. For me, it’s just the courtesy.”  – via Bobby Manning @ CLNSMedia.com

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

It’s sad that Brad didn’t tell him personally that he was traded, if what’s being reported is true. Marcus is such a class act.

Wish these GMs had the courage to have a difficult conversation and tell their players upfront.  League-wide problem nowadays… always hear about players finding out through twitter or sportscenter or whatever.  Don’t like that much.

Relationships are always more complicated than a singular incident would reveal ….  Smart, Stevens, Brown, etc. have not only known one another a long time, they’ve been in rather close company as teammates, coach, etc. Complex - not defined by one incident any more than one should assume bad blood between you and a sibling if they heard you had a heated argument.

Also, Brad may very well have a side of the story that might reasonably explain why Marcus learned about the trade from his agent and not from Brad.

Me thinks there was a power struggle within the Celtics lockerroom because smart thought he was the alpha

Evidence? Or just fan fiction? Sounds pretty ridiculous to me. All this Smart thinks he's an alpha makes me laugh. Je took the shots Brad, then Joe, asked him too. Ime wanted something else, and he adjusted for that year. Seems pretty obvious to me.

I don't think there was conflict but I do believe there was a lack of heirarchy. A lack of someone in charge (amongst the players). A lack of "this is who we are, this is what we are about". A lack of "this isn't going well, this is what we do now". A lack of "when things go bad make sure this player gets the ball more so they can right the ship". Just a lack of direction.

Coaches provide direction but players have to lead too. There was a lack of leadership from the players particularly Tatm & Jaylen. There was a lack of "hey this is my team, get me the dang ball right here right now" from Tatum.

Too ... I was watching a Grant Hill interview on the Knuckleheads podcast with Darius Miles and Quentin Richardson. Grant Hill talked about "wanting to fit in too much" "instead of being willing to stand out". That is what I felt watching Tatum. He wanted to fit in and be part of the team more than he was ready to takeover. In several Q4s in the playoffs. We talked about it often. How the ball wouldn't get to him. How it felt like he was frozen out at times. That the coach needed to make sure he called plays that forced the ball into Tatum's hands instead of an equal opportunity offensive set.

That type of leadership. That type of heirarchy.

I thought the Jays were still looking too much to Horford & Smart to provide the leadership. The Jays are now the best players. They have to step up and be better leaders. They have to stop looking to the role players to lead the team as much as they do. We need some leadership from the role players but we need the two Jays to take a larger leadership role.

That is one silver lining of Smart leaving because he is a big personality and sometimes it can be easy to hide behind a big personality. I don't think it was Smart not letting them be leaders. I just think the Jays were comfortable letting Smart & Horford do it rather than taking on the responsibility themselves.

Me too. Give him time in Maine and see what he can do.
