Bobby Manning: Just talked to Grant Williams at his Boston b-ball camp & he said he isn’t stressing the free agency period as it continues: “For me, it’s a matter of making sure you’re in a great position for the rest of your life,” he told me. 3 hours ago – via Twitter RealBobManning
I think it’s reasonable to consider that a person like Grant Williams may approach things differently than some others would. First off, I don’t believe Grant ever experienced poverty the way many other NBA players have. His mom is an electrical engineer with NASA with an extraordinary resume and father a talented musician with an interesting and diverse background including basketball. Parents separated when he was young but it sounds like Grant benefited from the talents of both parents - experienced world travel through his mom’s work, and had access to unique learning experiences. He seems to be brilliant in his own right - completed a 4 year business degree in 3 years, plays multiple musical instruments, and was a nationally ranked chess player at one point.
All this to suggest that this is possibly not a person who worries a lot about what will become of him if he doesn’t thoroughly maximize his earning potential in the NBA. I’m not suggesting that I think he’ll take much less for a better life circumstance but he might be more likely than others to take a little less. Just idle speculation, but if Grant loves his current situation and offers aren’t that much more than Cs, he might just stay. On the other hand, Grant seems like a very curious guy who would probably embrace a new opportunity if it looked like the right one.
