Wow, great stat.  So Tatum has 3 more rounds, best case, say 6 games per round, 18 more games total, say 24 pts per game, that is 432 more points potentially taking him to 1,628 or up to third on the list.  Even in a worst case, doomsday scenario, he gets 100 more points and ends up 5th.

Pretty solid.
Not bad company to keep. Soon to be two dozen championships in that group ;)

Kind of a useless stat in my opinion. Doesn’t take into account how many games they play. Average per game seems like it would more telling

Not really, because this indicates lots of winning and high scoring to boot. These guys all have multiple titles.

Eh. Tony Parker wasn't a high scorer. He is on that list because he was drafted to a team with Tim Duncan.  Magic wasn't a prolific scorer either.  Lots of deep playoff runs by those two because they played with the greatest PF and greatest C in league history.  Kobe is also on that list mostly because of Shaq (he also helped Wade).  Lebron, Durant, and Tatum were the #1 option on their team. They are the main reason their teams won and got the games played they did.

Ugh, this topic continues to irk me. I know I should refrain from posting because it just bumps this to the top of the "latest discussions" board, but sometimes it can't be helped.

Will JT be better than PP? Maybe. JT's trajectory is certainly good.

Is JT at age 24 as good or better than PP? I think that's very debatable, and I'd probably lean "PP". You can show me all the stats you want about playoff games won, etc, but the reality is that PP was on crappy teams when he was younger. That's not a reflection on him.

To date, PP has the better record, and its not even close (1 NBA championship to 0 is... infinitely better).

Now, if the Celtics win a championship this year, we can resuscitate this thread. But until then, can we just put it to rest?

Celtics fan for life.

I don't think it's necessarily worth throwing out because some of those guys were #2 scorers on championship calibre teams frequently in their early 20s, personally. Any stat that shows Tatum contributes to winning with his scoring at an advanced level for his age backs up what I see on the court, so I think it's fine!

He's going to need a ring but once he does, he'll pass Pierce in my eyes. To pass Hondo, he'd need several rings and some combination of scoring titles, MVPs and First Team All-NBAs to be considered.  I don't see him passing Bird with anything less than a 3-peat.

Hats off to Sam Jones there, doing it without the 3PT shot.

Amen

Sam Jones is perhaps the NBA’s most underrated star.

He’s the OG bank shot master. Sam was banking and collecting rings for fun before Jordan & Duncan were born.

unless they shoot like Steph Curry the 3 point shot generally leads to less overall points scored

How so?  50% 2PT shooting is equivalent to 33.3% shooting on the same number of shots.

If your theory is right, doesn’t every team in the NBA presently have it wrong?
