The question that i have is ... do you really trade for Derrick White (in his prime, making $15 M per year) and not start him?  Then, if you start him, do you really go with a backcourt of White and Smart, neither of whom is a reliable outside shooter?  Or, do you really move Marcus to the bench?  None of these seem to make sense.

Smart, White, Timelord, Theis

Celts now have 4 guys on reasonable mid-tier starter money locked up for several years, plus still control most of their own picks.

Seems like they'll still be in a decent spot to make a trade if a star becomes available.
TP.  Those mid-size contracts are valuable, more than TPEs in my opinion.

I think this year he comes off the bench and closes games, because the starting lineup as is has been so solid.  Next year he'll start next to Smart.

With Theis coming in, we no longer really have the option of going smaller and starting these two in the backcourt with the Jays at forward. Not enough minutes to go around for Theis, Horford, Timelord (or Grant Williams).

So one of Smart / White need to come off the bench. The team is rolling at the moment so a lineup change is unlikely therefore I expect White will be the one to come off the bench.

This make a lot of sense. I think Theis is Al's replacement next year, but not playing alongside RWIII, more as the backup to RWIII.
Smart/White/Brown/Tatum/RWIII looks like a still good defensive line-up. Smart and White are shooting the 3 better than Al this year.

Its easy for me to see in the playoffs White/Smart/Brown taking all the guard minutes with Jaylen having a few to backup Tatum.

Sounds like pick swap is additional and top-1 protected.

I like White, but that’s too much to give up for him. And we could really be regretting that in 2028 for all we know. Isn’t our star player Tatum the result of our 2017 swap with Brooklyn?

Very, very, very risky move for a player like White, especially given what we have up to get him.
Recovering Joe Skeptic, but inching towards a relapse.

For this year's playoffs something like.
Smart 34 - White 14
Brown 30 - White 18
Tatum 36 - Brown 6 - Grant 6
Horford 30 - Grant 18
GWIII 30 - Theis 18

For the regular season;
when Pritchard plays Brown plays more 3 - Grant plays more 4 - Al gets more rest. I think Pritchard can play in the backcourt with either Smart/White.
when Nesmith plays the "rest" can be spread around.

I'm making the assumption Ime (no pun intended) is going to play Theis over Pritchard/Nesmith due to vet status.

Very true, but despite the fleecing, BKN is closer to a chip than we are.

i agree. But...

Maybe Udoka knows white well and maybe he thinks very highly of him.

Maybe PBS likes him and his contract.

Maybe there was a real market for him so the celtics had to pay.

Maybe this year's first is worthless since it is very weak draft.

Maybe in 2028 the celtics' pick is #30.

I guess.

but white is both younger and better than richardson. and while i supported langford, i confess i also supported yaubsele. so what do i know?

okay. so far PBS has done well, let's see how this all works out and what he does to fill all the empty roster spots. i hope hauser is ready to make the jump.  ;D

I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

I think people will like White better.  he can create his own offense, get to the hoop and is an extremely unselfish player.  I love Smart but he's terrible on offense.  White is a clear upgrade on Smart on the offensive end.  He's also a plus defender as well.

Uh, I suspect I can't be the only one who thinks one Smart is enough. 1.75 Smarts is pushing it.
