Derrick White is a Derek Fisher sort of player. A Rick Fox. A glue guy on a contender. Good and valuable in his own right.

But not a star. Not a foundational piece. Not someone you build around.

He is a finishing piece to put around your stars.

The Jays.

They're not enough. We are 2/3rds of the way to where we need to be.

I know, dreaming while we wait for #3 to join the team.

Who do you see out there who could be the third target, Who?

It's good and well to say "we need a third guy," but it's not really sound strategy to simply try to maintain flexibility forever waiting for an opportunity.

I would argue that's what got Danny Ainge into trouble the last few years.

Brad at least seems to have a vision and is taking steps to execute that vision.

Lillard is the guy to keep tabs on. That situation in Portland is fluid. Beal also albeit less so.

If no major star is available, then Stevens has to go to Plan B and build a Big Four / Five type team around Tatum, Jaylen and Rob Williams + two other above average starters. Win with balance and depth. Like Jalen Brunson and Harrison Barnes.

Further down the line, Towns may become available. AD might end up becoming available if LA blows it up if they fail horribly again next year and LeBron wants out.

I disagree. I thought this is what Ainge did well. The plan failed but the plan was good. He put in the team in a position / gave them an opportunity to become a Championship group. Some things didn't work out like the Hayward career changing injury, Isaiah's career changing injury, the Kyrie diva meltdown, the AD trade not materializing.

Sometimes plans fail even when they are good plans. Ainge had a good plan and gave the team an opportunity to do something great. I like what he did. I respect what he was doing & trying to do.

I see no vision. Just band-aids.

I think he's trying to build a defensive-minded team. Which is great, at least this team is building an identity.

I'm a little less thrilled with his knack of trading for players he used to coach.
2021 Houston Rockets
PG: Kyrie Irving/Patty Mills/Jalen Brunson
SG: OG Anunoby/Norman Powell/Matisse Thybulle
SF: Gordon Hayward/Demar Derozan
PF: Giannis Antetokounmpo/Robert Covington
C: Kristaps Porzingis/Bobby Portis/James Wiseman

Two All Star caliber wings, top 5 defense, team-oriented offense

That seems like a perfectly plausible vision to me

Is it likely to win 60 games and be a title favorite?

No

But I haven't felt like there was really a path to making the Celtics into that kind of team for at least 2-3 years now.

I would be happy with "50-55 win team that has a shot at making the Finals if everybody breaks exactly right and then who knows."  I think that's the ceiling of a Tatum/Brown team anyway.

I mean fair enough, if the Celts didn't have a ton of bad luck & if some of the personalities involved were not so noxious maybe the Celts would be in a very different position right now.

But to be honest I've gotten pretty sick of the "we're just maintaining flexibility" thing, and I think the players and the coaching staff were sick of it, too.

I love how over at Poundingtherock half the spurs fans are upset with losing White ...

... and over here half the Celtics fans are upset with a potential pick swap.

Fans really are the least rational human beings on the planet hey :')

Anyway, I'm keen to see what White brings. A pick swap between Celtics and Spurs, if it'd happen today, with the draft today, would mean we'd drop from 25 to 11.

Wonder if that could close in the next few years.

What?

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

Yeah I'm an idiot and haven't had my coffee yet. It's early. All the excuses.

The worst part; I wrote this post RIGHT initially, the flipped it around.

I am legit, the dumbest human being on the planet occasionally. Or at least vying for that title.

A sideway move based on position. He can pass the ball well and play PG.

Good-bye Schroder.
