Reports have Fournier to Knicks. 3 years, 54 mil

That'd be straight up embarrassing if we wouldn't come close to that deal.

I guess it seems a bit obvious now that the Celtic FO doesn't value the trade exceptions as much as us fans do.

Yeah, will be interesting to see if Fournier really gets that and we don’t offer it. Like, what did you expect he was going to get when trading for him?

That's my feeling too. Letting him walk for nothing because they don't want to match $18 a year? Come on.

Alec Burks is also expected to re-sign with the Knicks on a three-year agreement worth roughly $30 million.

Nerlens Noel seems likely to return to Madison Square Garden on a deal worth slightly more than $10 million annually

If those two are worth 20 million combined, then Fournier at 17 million is an absolute steal.

I think it will show that was an Ainge decision and not a Stevens decision, and/or the team liked the idea of Fournier more than the actual player once he got here.  I remember that Ainge’s rationale for the move was that he wanted to give the team “hope”.

Anyway, while I’d rather Fournier than not, I also would note that it’s a much greater folly to sign someone to a large deal who you don’t want just because you gave up a couple of second round picks (and I should note that they weren’t great seconds — one was the worst pick of multiple teams, and the other was in 2027).  Those picks are a sunk cost — you don’t sign Fournier to more than you want to pay him just because you traded for him four months earlier.

The contracts being discussed in these threads seem to be for some players way more than expected.  I mean if Curry is worth $54 mil, if Jarett Allen is worth $100 for 5 years...isn't $17-18 mil a year for EF a 'moveable' contract?  Especially if he starts on the C's and would get lots of opportunities.

This is what I worried about with New York - "found gold" type response to last season and the false believe that their team is way better and have way more potential than their group actually has and that they make bad decisions based on this belief.

Looks like this is the case.

Not happy at all if we lose Fournier for this price.  When we traded for him Ainge had stated they had every intention of keeping Fournier long term.  I guess Stevens had different ideas or maybe ownership is having cold feet going that deep into the tax.  Fournier though not Gordon Hayward had very similar stats to him, and this would be less than 2/3 the cost of Hayward while also a couple years younger and less of an injury history.  I take his play with us at the end of the season with a grain of salt as he was still recovering from COVID.

As the team stands now I think we’ll struggle to score alot when we don’t have both Tatum and Brown in the game.

Let's remember that Fournier is an unrestricted FA and he spent just a few months on the Celtics, during which time the team was mostly non-competitive and he had a very bad case of COVID.

It's not exactly shocking if he wasn't especially interested in staying.

Also, if the Celts don't re-sign him that might be because they're cheap ... or it might be that they're not interested in tying up cap space.  They haven't extended Smart or Rob Williams yet, either.

Also, what reports?  Not seeing it from Woj or Shams, who are the best at breaking this stuff.

The Celts were never going to get him on a one year deal, though.  Why trade for him?  And why attempt to re-sign him if you're not willing to go 3 years, $54 million?  (I do agree that that's not a firm number at this point)

I would have been ok with 4/60 for Fournier. Is 3 years the max a team can offer?

It could be as simple as Brad now making decisions vs Danny.  Maybe Brad didn't want Evan.  Maybe he does not see Evan as a piece that can help win a chip.  Why resign a guy who doesn't make you good enough to win it all.  I don't see Fournier as the guy that gets is over the hump.

Thing is, we changed our GM. Brad wasn't in charge at the time. It's possible that Danny and Brad have different opinions on Fournier/cap flexibility/you name it.

No, they can offer up to 4 years. We can offer up to 5 years.
