Denver should trade Murray for Lillard. Win now move for the Nuggets and a win later move for the blazers who can just tank the season for a pick and come back next year with Murray.

Murray and Barton for Lillard works in trade machine....

Agreed. That would be awesome for Denver. Title contender.

I am not wild about Jamal Murray but it is hard to see Portland doing much better in terms of getting a high quality young talent. Maybe Ben Simmons depending on which of the two polarizing extremes you come down on with him.

IMO Brooklyn have the most talented roster going into the 21/22 season:

G: Kyrie Irving, Patty Mills, Jevon Carter
G: James Harden, Bruce Brown Jr, Cameron Thomas

F: Joe Harris, DeAndre Bembry
F: Kevin Durant, James Johnson, Alize Johnson

C: DeAndre Jordan, Blake Griffin, Nicolas Claxton

Honestly, for a closing lineup of

Mills
Irving
Harden
Harris
Durant

How do you stop that level of offence?

Yeah, I'd love to see Durant play more center in these final stages of his career. He could destroy folks there.

I hope they use this lineup. It's lethal.

Yeah, if true the Smart extension news is surprising given the whole argument about trying to keep cap space open for next year.

Though as these continued star extensions (i.e. KD/Brooklyn) kind of show, that whole plan has been questionable from the get-go.

You get Murray next year and you also get a tank year for a lotto pick.

A bit surprising, but perhaps Smart at 4 years, $77 million is viewed as easier to move than Fournier.  I think that’s probably correct, but they have much better information than fan.  They know the offers they’ve had for Smart, and they know what they were able to give up for Fournier.  With an extension, Smart would be making roughly $2 million less than Fournier next year.  Furthermore, while the overall dollar value is similar, because there will be significant cap inflation next year compared to this, Smart’s deal will be comparatively cheaper over its lifetime, by up to 10%.

Dave McMenamin said recently that he’d heard it was LeBron’s preference to trade for Westbrook over Buddy Hield.

I’m sure it will work out well, like him wanting Wade & Rose in Cleveland.

Hilarious. And not surprising with Lebron.

Hield would’ve been such a good fit with that group with his shooting, off-ball movement, and no need to have the ball to be effective. Superb fit with Lebron and AD.

I'm not a cap expert, so forgive me if this sounds ignorant, but how is it that teams like Brooklyn, GS, and the Lakers are handing out huge extensions and signing numerous free agents while all the news coming out of Boston makes it sound as though we're in some sort of cap hell, and that we might not even be able to clear quite enough cap room to give Beal a max deal next offseason? Does this all come down to Boston's owners not wanting to pay the luxury tax, and these other teams have no problem paying the luxury tax?

Yes

LOL. TP for succinctness.

Matty, you have said a few times you have inside sources and been right about a couple things, so I have to ask, why is the answer of "yes, the owners are being cheap" incorrect?

Man, foolish move. Hield launching 10 3s a game would have been so deadly with the inside games of LeBron and AD

What makes it even worse is because of Westbrook’s salary, the Lakers had to throw in KCP to make the numbers work.

In the Hield deal he wasn’t included, so they could have kept KCP as a defensive stopper or flipped him for another important player. I’m not sure if the Lakers 22nd draft pick was included in the original Hield trade either, but I could be wrong.

That’s what happens when you let a star run your organisation. I’m sure Dr. Buss is rolling over in his grave with what the Lakers have turned into.

Although I hate them, the Lakers use to be a first class, player developing franchise just like the Celtics. I remember Dr. Buss actually wanted to sack Phil Jackson much earlier in the 2000’s, purely because of the slow triangle offence he ran. Dr Buss wanted the Lakers to play entertaining uptempo basketball.

valid question...well I was actually more so referencing the poster's question in regards to the cap, although i am also not an expert, I'm aware how it works. all three of those teams are positioned in a way that they can trade for an expensive contract, or extend their current players with bird rights.
If the c's believed that russ or lowry was the missing piece we could have traded for one of them as well, and went over the cap to compete for a few years, although from what I've seen here (and my own sentiment as well) most here wouldnt have thought those would be good moves.
I can tell you that if things went as was planned a few years ago we would still be well over the cap, paying into the luxury, and competing for titles with a team that slightly resembles the nets, and in that case ownership would not have been considered cheap.  alas that didn't work out, and we are still recovering from some bad moves and one unlucky break. (hayward)
regardless of me defending the ownership in regards to what team we could of potentially had, or still could have within a year or two with another hopefully deserving max player,  I do think there have been moves on the margins that I consider cheap, I can't argue with that. I just know that what they were hoping for and still planning for would get the same reaction as the poster from fans of other teams.
I hope I explained my position well enough, I am not that good of a writer and I'm kind of in a rush, I just wanted to respond as soon as i could

I feel like Marcus won’t be thrilled with that number and we will be dealing him. I always expected more than a middle to late 1st rounder but maybe that’s what we’re looking at.
Both Lonzo and Derozan going to Chicago hurts. They’re putting a nice team together. I was hoping Lavine bound be available as well.
This is a really fun year to speculate about but I’m wondering if we’re a lottery team.

Raptors got Precious Achiuwa in that Lowry deal as well as Dragic so their roster now looks like:

G: VanVleet,
G: Dragic, G.Trent Jr
F: Anunoby, Scottie Barnes
F: Siakam, Boucher
C: Birch, Achiuwa

They got a strange team. No real centers. I wonder if they will keep this group together and play a micro-ball type team this season. A two guard backcourt alongside 3 combo forward type frontcourt players (all 6-8/6-9 long rangy).

It is not like there are a bunch of great centers out there (remaining in FA) that will transform their team. I wonder if they are not better off staying small and quick and trying to out-run opponents instead.

Dragic's made some comments about the trade that make it seem like there's an agreement with Toronto that he'll be traded again this summer, and they're one of the most plausible Simmons destinations, so I'd say their final rotation is still pending.
