Jimmy Butler signs a max extension. 4 years, $184 million. $46 million per year for Butler is a lot, especially with the cap not growing as fast as it has traditionally. At what point do teams decide to let the market play out? How many teams have $40+ million in cap space, and how many would Butler sign with over Miami?
Agreed. His salary at the age of 36 will be $51,646,000! This is crazy! That said, the C's lost Hayward and Horford in free agency because we let the market play out. Funny thing is, Horford returned to the C's on the exact same contract we were unwilling to offer him a couple of years ago. We even sacrificed a mid first rounder in the process.
Strictly as a means to get off a worse contract. Not because we decided that he signed a good contract.
Sure, but if we had kept Horford, we wouldn't have had the cap space to sign Kemba. We were trying to play it safe and we ended up making an even bigger mistake with Kemba.
Having max cap space available is a double-edged sword sometimes. There are very few players who are actually worth the max. If you miss out on the truly elite players, you may very well end up with an albatross.
Question is, is Beal a truly elite player? I don't think he is tbh. That said, I'd much rather offer a 4-year max to a 29-year-old Bradley Beal over a 32-year-old Jimmy Butler.
