Jimmy Butler signs a max extension.  4 years, $184 million.  $46 million per year for Butler is a lot, especially with the cap not growing as fast as it has traditionally.  At what point do teams decide to let the market play out?  How many teams have $40+ million in cap space, and how many would Butler sign with over Miami?

Australia’s Aron Baynes was missing from the Boomers’ medal podium in Tokyo. Tough news: Sources say Baynes remains in the hospital with severe nerve damage in his neck, an injury more significant than initially diagnosed, and could miss the entire 2021-22 season.

Agreed. His salary at the age of 36 will be $51,646,000! This is crazy! That said, the C's lost Hayward and Horford in free agency because we let the market play out. Funny thing is, Horford returned to the C's on the exact same contract we were unwilling to offer him a couple of years ago. We even sacrificed a mid first rounder in the process.

Strictly as a means to get off a worse contract. Not because we decided that he signed a good contract.

Sure, but if we had kept Horford, we wouldn't have had the cap space to sign Kemba. We were trying to play it safe and we ended up making an even bigger mistake with Kemba.

Having max cap space available is a double-edged sword sometimes. There are very few players who are actually worth the max. If you miss out on the truly elite players, you may very well end up with an albatross.

Question is, is Beal a truly elite player? I don't think he is tbh. That said, I'd much rather offer a 4-year max to a 29-year-old Bradley Beal over a 32-year-old Jimmy Butler.

Here we go.  Thoughts on what is going to happen?

Bobby Manning @RealBobManning12m
There we go. It’s only fair.

Adrian Wojnarowski
Reporting with @RamonaShelburne on ESPN: The NBA has opened up investigations into possible tampering violations involving two sign-and-trade deals completed in free agency: New Orleans and Chicago centered on Lonzo Ball, and Toronto and Miami centered on Kyle Lowry. Story soon.

Probably nothing but they could void the deals. It probably delays Schroder signing as two point guards are involved.

Tampering is a way of life in the NBA. I'm not sure why the league still pretends otherwise.

Until the NBA grows a pair and starts giving teams severe punishments, tampering will continue as usual.

Yeah.  It seems like there were dozens of deals announced within an hour of free agency being opened.  It's hilarious that the NBA turns a blind eye to that, but decides to punish teams for sign-and-trade negotiations.

The Knicks tampered with Fournier.  The Celtics did, too.  That happens with every single free agent.

Yeah, Didn't Lebron meet with Westbrook to make sure in wanted in and didn't Kyrie and Durant meet during the season when Kyrie was with the Celtics to agree to sign in Brooklyn so Kyrie could quit on us during that Bucks series? Very common.

How did the Celtics tamper? Fournier was their own free agent, I thought teams are allowed to communicate with their own free agents early on.

Celtics2021 can correct me if I’m wrong, but teams aren’t allowed to negotiate with their own free agents until free agency begins.  There are some limited exceptions that Fournier doesn’t fall into.

I remember reports 2-3 weeks before FA opened that teams were already in contact / tampering with FAs and that it was even worse than last year.

I do not know why it took the league so long to intervene. If you are going to intervene, do it early. Otherwise shut up. They had enough information early on to do more. They didn't. That showed they do not really care about tampering.

Yeah, that’s my understanding as well.  It’s possible that the Celtics had a discussion about an extend-and-trade back in March, so numbers could have been legally exchanged then that the Celtics didn’t agree to, and laid the groundwork for summer negotiations.  But conversations in June and July would have been technically impermissible.
