Two trades on deadline day for the C's:

Trade #1

Celtics get Fournier
Magic get Teague, 2 second round picks, ~$17 million TPE

Trade #2

Celtics get L. Kornet, M. Wagner
Wizards get D. Gafford, C. Hutchinson
Bulls get D. Theis, J. Green, T. Brown Jr. , $1.3m (from BOS) $250k (from WAS)

Are you happy with the result?

I give it an A. It turns out the trades we propose and reality are not quite in sync. Magic wanted too much for Gordon and other stretch bigs were going to cost even more.

The overall feeling I get is Danny is patient and we couldn’t swing anything that made us contenders this year, so don’t overpay. Fournier will get us some wins and maybe he even finds a role he likes and sticks around. Plus it was good to dump a couple 2nd rounders given how much youth we already have.

Moving on from Theis is tough but necessary and reflects the reality of this team: we’re young again but in a different way this time. TL also needs those minutes.

We can still deal with Kemba and/or Smart in the offseason and have more money for a real difference making piece.

I just don’t see the point of the second trade.

Yeah, I'm still trying to wrap my head around the 2nd one.

I don't really think these moves are very defendable.  Boston is not any closer to a title this year and didn't get any players that could reasonably contribute in 2-3 years when Tatum and Brown are truly ready.  The TPE is more than cut in half significantly reducing its value in the summer.  Dumping Teague into the Fournier trade makes no sense other than to just shave cash.  Theis is significantly better than Wagner and Kornet, so a huge talent downgrade, again to save some cash (and then the team sent out cash as well so Chicago can presumably cut Green).

Just a calamity of errors all to get slightly better with Fournier who is either going to cost a bunch to re-sign or will leave this summer.

Then you see what Vucevic, Gordon, and Oladipo get traded for and you wonder what the heck Ainge was doing.  I mean Houston just gave Oladipo away.  He might actually improve Boston's title chances this year, and yet he wasn't here.  Vucevic and Gordon also would have improved the title chances this year, and Gordon would have improved them long term.  Just a horrible trade deadline for Ainge.  It is time for him to go.  He has just lost his way.

I will start by saying I'm surprised that Ainge made a move, I thought he would stay put as none of the moves really put us over the hump in terms of talent upgrades. They are more incremental moves to make us a bit better but not significantly better. That said, I'm ok with getting Fournier. He won't average 20 ppg with us but that's ok, we just need him to be a solid consistent per-36 scorer with the minutes and usage he will get with us. It should take some pressure off Kemba, and Smart (hopefully) won't (shouldn't) feel the need to be a hero as often as he does. Fournier will be an upgrade over everyone on our bench. I guess the question became, who could we get this summer that isn't already available now, that wouldn't require us to shed salary anyway? I could be wrong but I think we're at the tax apron already this summer even before using the TPE on sign and trades because of JT's supermax.

Shipping Theis to Chicago sucks as I love Theis' work ethic, he's definitely exceeded expectations during his time here, remember he was initially signed for like $1m? He's a hard worker and did all the dirty work that nobody notices, setting screens, boxing out, etc. But I think Danny and Brad are confident enough that Timelord playing more minutes will be an upgrade over Theis in everything at least from a physical standpoint. He doesn't have Theis's range from 3 as of yet or his BBIQ. Let's hope Rob's BBIQ catches up to Daniel's eventually as if it does he will be a very solid player. But I think Theis will be a loss at least initially. Not in the way most fans will notice but his teammates will definitely notice his absence. Wagner I think is more of a long term project.

As for Teague, clearly they feel that Pritchard's the guy that can fill that backup PG role. They didn't know that at the time Teague was initially signed so he's become redundant.

Trade 1:  "ask again later" the 8 ball answer because we have no idea if we can resign him or at what costs
Trade 2: F

The trades together make zero sense.  You traded for Fournier because you wanted improvement this year (because that is all that is for sure with him) and then you traded Theis because he would be too expensive next year.

So I went with a D.

It depends on the buy out market. I don't think deep playoff as of now is the goal. But I could see DA bringing back IT and making a move for Cousins. It could be a great redemption story or a fire dumpster waiting to happen. But it would be entertaining either way. 😆

We're "closer", but we're certainly not a top-tier team.

But, what makes you think that Fournier can't contribute in 2-3 years?

Unless the Celtics are adding Giannis or Lebron, they are not competing with the Nets for the next few years. Adding Gordon and/or Vucevic was not going to change that. Olidipo had stated earlier in the season that he wanted to be in Miami. Fournier is 28 years old, why wouldn’t  he be able to contribute in 2-3 years? The trade was a great value, minus Teague. Have no idea why they had to include him....I  also don’t understand the Theis trade.

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

Danny has never been high on the buyout market, certainly not as high as most fans are. Here's what he has said about it in the past:

Quote
“Just because guys are available on the buyout market and there’s people that average points, it doesn’t mean it makes your team better.

“We’ve been through this many, many years, and I think that often times the buyout market and the names on the back of the jerseys are people hoping — and fans and coaches — that we’re getting a player of a year or two or three years before, and we’re not getting what we really need, which is defensive presence, guys that know our system and guys that know what we are."

This deadline was a great opportunity to improve the roster significantly. Seeing the fire sale in Orlando - couldn’t we have gotten Gordon and Vucevic on top of Fournier.
Something like Kemba plus Tristan plus Nesmith plus 3 FRPs
